Ok, after weeks of fighting, troubleshooting, debugging, deleting, reloading, uninstalling, installing etc etc etc....I have finally come to the conclusion, that being able to print, is simply no longer a feature with windows operating system. Unless someone can tell me a fix that no one has discovered yet. I refuse to believe that the fix to our printing problems, is throw out the PC and get a new one. If thats the case i'm sure that there will be many people like myself who make the leap to MAC!!!!!

Hi,

We would be able to help you far better if you told us what model of printer you are trying to get working. Many of us have problems with printers when we upgrade from XP (particularly with an upgrade rather than a clean install). However as a community we have managed to get many different types of printers to work. I have a Dell AIO 944 that took me many many months to fix, but now works fine. We may know how to get your printer working in some obscure way.

Currently, i have an HP laserjet 1020...i have removed all the drivers, and started from scratch with new drivers from HP as one of the many steps taken so far...also, this is a new PC, not an upgrade from XP, the spooler problem just happened one day, and wasn't associated with any new software installations, or upgrade downloads etc

Hi,

Interestingly my Dad has that exact same printer running fine on Vista. It is an old Dell PC that has just had a clean install to Vista Home Premium x86 after an extremely problematic XP install and a dying hard disk. I had no problems at all getting it working. I would therefore assume that your problem is that you have a x64 Vista install. I will look into this for you, but I can't guarentee that I can get it working. I will try it on my x64 laptop.

Good luck!

Richard

Hi,

For this problem there is one easy solution that sometimes works but is definitely worth a try. There are other more complex solutions but let’s try them later. Browse to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete everything in that folder. Do not delete the directory itself.

To be able to delete these files you may have to take ownership and modify the permissions. To do this:

 • Right Click and select Properties on the PRINTERS directory.
 • Select the Security tab and click Advanced at the bottom.
 • Select the Owner tab and click Edit.
 • Select your account name from the list and select "Replace owner on subcontainer and objects" Click OK and Click OK on the message box.
 • Click OK again.
 • On the Security tab of the normal Properties Window click Edit.
 • Give everyone on the list full control.
 • Click OK on the message box.
 • You may have to follow the previous step twice in total.
 • OK out of all open windows.
 • You should now be able to delete the contents of the PRINTERS folder.
Hope this fixes your problem.

Hi Richard, a few months ago you helped me with this printing problem. Everything has been fine, until now. And i have discovered what is initiating the problem. I went to work on my books, and needed to print by e-statments from the bank. I have determined that Adobe Reader is causing the crash. Not just when printing from a website, anytime you go to print from Reader, the spooler crashes. Any ideas???
