i have done a complete back up on an external hard drive. Would this give me everything back if the computer crashed or do i need to make a recovery disk- is that different? Lost everything on another computer due to someone pressing one of the f buttons and dont want to have to pay for a complete computer rebuild again.

Brand loyalty does you no good if the Restore CD does not have a driver that supports your hard drive controller. First thing to do when trying out an image backup program is burn the Restore CD and boot it. If it cannot see your HD there's no sense even making a backup with it. If the first one you try works, so much the better. Don't just assume it will work. If you have anything other than the standard Sata disk controller(such as Raid) the restore program may not work. Or if it does it may need to use "compatibility mode"(read "10 times slower") to get it done.

Only way to know for sure is to boot the CD and enter the restore program. If it can see your HD then you should be good to go.
