Help getting Vista back

I'm sorry for being stupid but I need help. I let a friend put Windows 7 on my pc and I want Vista back. When I boot into system recovery I do not have the "restore complete pc" option. I do not have a recovery disc for it. Is there anything I can do to recover Vista another way? Thanks for any help.

kenny, the site you linked provides a "recovery disk" - not an "installation disk". You cannot reinstall the system with that disk. The OP needs to go to the manufacturer of his PC and ask for an installation disk. They usually provide that for a S&H charge (about $20).

Thanks for your help friends. I'll download the recovery disc and give that a try. The backup partition D is there and I hope this disc will recover Vista for me. I'll let you know how it works. And yes you are right; some friend. Thanks again.

kenny is right. if the recovery partition is still there, you should be able to reinstall from there. But since each manufacturer has their own way of getting into it (it is dependent on the BIOS setup and has nothing to do with the OS that is currently installed), we need to know at least the manufacturer. Chances are I even have the whole recovery procedure in my files that I could post for you.
And once you are back into Vista, you better burn those recovery DVDs from the recovery partition - for the next friend encounter.

Hi again, The pc is just a cheap emachines model T3642. I'm pushing F8 before it loads and then going to the "repair your computer". It has system restore, restore from image, startup repair, windows memory diagnostic and command prompt. After I get here I don't know what to do. Also I downloaded the recovery files and burned to a disc but I can't get the pc to boot from the disc. I have the cd\dvd set as first boot in the bios but I must not be burning it right or something. I'm using Ashampoo Burning studio 9 on another pc and I have never had problems with it before. Thanks again for your help.

Here is the E-Machines procedure that I once made up for someone. It is the same as for Gateway.

1. Copy all your own files and folders to an external storage (Disc, USB stick even SD card - 1 GByte capacity should be ample - even 512 MB)
2. Shut the PC off
3. Turn the PC back on and keep hitting the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Option Screen appears
4. Click "Repair Your Computer" –if you are not already on it, use the up and down arrows to maneuver to it and then press ENTER
5. Next you have to pick your country and click OK
6. On the "System Recovery Options Screen" click "Restore Application" (last option)
7. Follow the on-screen instructions
8. When prompted, click on "Full Factory Recovery"
9. Click "Next"
10. Click "Yes"
11. Go and have a cup of coffee - don't touch anything - for a while it seems like nothing is happening
12. After many minutes, recovery will complete and you click "Finish"

Thanks for your reply. my problem is, I get to the "system recovery options" but the only options I get for recovery are system restore and system image recovery for a restore point or recovery with a backup disc. I don't have the restore application option to get to the full recovery and there is no recovery manager like the Gateway support shows. Is the Windows 7 making the options different?

I don't like the way eMachines put the 'image' onto HD and don't give you a CD.

Have you tried a system restore in windows?

Hmm, that's too bad. It is possible that the Win7 installation has modified it - but I am not sure. I never had this case before. I guess you have to call Gateway or E-Machines for a disk.

You are supposed to burn your own DVDs as soon as you are done with the installation. But most people don't read the instructions in the little booklet that comes with the PC.

I have a newer acer and emachine, both prompt you to make dvds.
some people are "to busy" and never get around to it!!

PS: I have two sets
