hi,
similar problem.. im gnna give out all the details i have managed till now..
i have a laptop,vaio VGN -CR363 , my OS is vista,32 its about 18 months old..

just before the bsod problems my bluetooth adapter was working up and i got messages to reinstall the drivers fer it.(didnt pay much heed to it)i thnk i had a few viruses on my system i used avira and cleaned them up.(only the c:) i also let windows update download updates (around 450 mb) (in the meantime i went out fer a smoke) it installed them then prompted me to reboot. i rebooted it when i got back and since then iv had this error message.(BSOD)

a problem has been detected ..blah blah..windows shut down to prevent damage to your system.. .
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
.
.
.
stop :0x000000ED (0x85B33808,0X80000003,0X00000000,0X00000000)

the first time i saw this i nearly shat in my pants, when i regained control of my bowel movements i managed to fumble upto the system repair that is bundled with the system. my 250gb hdd is divided into usable part for me, and the restore part which is not accessible normally.which is why i never bothered with bootable windows disks.
nevertheless i got to a (windows like)GUI when i accessed system repair.(which is loaded automatically upon rebooting after unsuccessful boot)the automatic system repair failed and i got a box giving me options to either send a report to microsoft or not.nuthn happens either ways.. after this fails i am acquainted with some advanced options like
hardware diagnostics--> turned out ok i.e. my HDD hasnt collapsed (also i can access all my hdd data through dos)
memory diagnostic ---> turned out ok.
also options for full system restore and to restore from a backup, neither of which worked.
among these options therz an option to start a command prompt too, it just opens up a small window in which you can work on command prompt. the default drive when this command prompt comes up is X:\(sumthn sumthn)\system32\>
i shifted to C:
and ran chkdsk/r
like this: C:\>chkdsk/r(srry im cnfsd abt whr to put slash and whr to put backslash, but i typed it in correct on the pc)
The type of the file system is NTFS
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by anothe process.
chkdsk may run if this disk is dismounted first
do you want to dismount ( i put in yes)
then:
chkdsk is verifying file (step 1 of 5)
.
.
766 lang files
0 bad file
0 EA records
41 reparse records.
verifying index (step 2)
5 unindexed files
chkdsk .verifying security descriptors(stage 3)
verification cmplt
usn jornal verification complete
.
.
.
but in the end it said:
failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.
also tried fixboot then. fixboot wasnt a recognised command.
so i thnk all my hardware is ok.. but still sumthing is wrong..!!
also, the BSOD error msg suggests that i should disable shadowing or sumthing in the BIOS. but the BIOS that comes up when i press f2 just has very little information. it has only the boot order , time, password. but nothing related to what is written in the error message.
i also tried all the safe mode options. all result in the same BSOD.actually tried all the options in the f8 menu/... nothing works..
i have been looking through forums of various sites ,on this topic for the past 5 hours.. haven't found anything that fixed it yet..
im in a really tight jam here guys i really want my data back.. :'(..
would deeply appreciate any help on this matter..

thanks in advance...

Re: vista /||\ stop :0x000000ED ,please have a look.

depends on which driver update software you were using.
some driver update software programs don't recognize your hardware (for example driver genius pro) and it installs Wrong software for the item, therefore causing windows to malfunction or, as in your case, not start at all (and showing the blue screen of death)

the least you can do right now is recover to the out-of-box state.
if you don't have the recovery cd's (or dvd's) I would strongly suggest to you to obtain any os and do a fresh install on your VAIO
Good luck and hope this helps!

Re: vista /||\ stop :0x000000ED ,please have a look.

first up, thanks a lot for the reply..
for updating the drivers i was using windows update. the annoying thing that keeps popping up all the time in vista..!!!
i do have the recovery dvds that i made when i bought the computer. i restart the pc with the first recovery disk in the drive but nothing happens. i tried going to do a system restore through these disks but still nothing happens. i think my cd-ROM might be a little ****ed up but im prty sure it is working. i can hear the disk inside spinning but the restore isnt working.

and here is the error report i get when the automatic startup repair fails.

Startup Repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem.

i dont know how to install a separate OS and even if i do how that will help my situation. i think i have a widows 98 cd but thats an installation cd.. would that work.?
also, looking at the errors i think its a software problem ,might have been caused by a virus or faulty drivers, so im hoping it can be repaired without having to loose all my data.

Re: vista /||\ stop :0x000000ED ,please have a look.

i do have the recovery dvds that i made when i bought the computer. i restart the pc with the first recovery disk in the drive but nothing happens.

did you set the cd/dvd drive in the 1st boot order?
start the machine and at the mfgr splash screen start tapping the f2 key..
that gets you into BIOS, use the arrow keys to navigate to the "boot tab"
now use the down arrow key to highlight the cd/dvd drive....
now use the f6 (or f5 can't remember) to bring the cd drive to the 1st boot order..press the f10 key to "save changes and exit" ( you may have to press y for yes and enter to exit)..
then put the cd in the tray and restart!! good luck

Re: vista /||\ stop :0x000000ED ,please have a look.

Hello psycho911,
It looks like your file system may be beyond repair, if it is, then the only option left is a format and re-install.
Before you do that, when booting try F8, you should come to a screen with a load of boot options, there will be one that says "Last Known Good Configuration", try that one and see if it will boot.
Do you know anybody with a Vista DVD/CD that you can borrow, to try a repair from that ?.
Don't give up just yet.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Can you get into Windows > Minidump > and upload the dump files, we may get a better idea of what is going on if we can debug the files.

Re: vista /||\ stop :0x000000ED ,please have a look.

hey tnx fer replyin stoney..
but as i mentioned earlier.. right now, i cant access anything in my laptop. earlier i was redirected to the windows recovery environment automatically upon reboot, which allowed me access to command prompt. but now i cant even enter that.(i dunno why) so basically, i cant touch anything on my system anymore.. at least it looks that way to me..
so im wondering what the fck is wrong with my system..

My Computer

You need to beg, steal, or borrow a Vista DVD/CD, so you can try and use the repair option and boot from the DVD/CD. If you can do this, you may be able to save the data on the HDD.

nope..
tried an XP cd.. my system wasnt even responding to that disk AT ALL..(and yes, i had external boot enabled) also tried with a flash drive .. that didnt work either..
and i dont think that the vista cd is a problem.. because the HDD has a seperate factory made recovery partition. which used to boot up to a windows recovery environment that gave me access to the HDD through command prompt.but now, even that is refusing to load.
is there any thing that can be done short of removing the HDD from the laptop and connecting it as a secondary to a desktop and formatting from there..?

My Computer

If the PC wont boot in safe mode, or in a normal boot, then removing the HDD may be the only solution, if for no other reason than to check that it is OK.
Not being able to boot at all is a pig, it makes any sort of repair that much harder.
I'm sorry i have not been able to help further, if you wait a bit, we may get some input from anther user.
When you get it fixed, be sure to let us know what was causing the problem.

P.S. Luv ur avatar.. :P

My Computer

If you have the cables, power and data, then it should be easy enough to connect it up to the Desktop.
The easy way is to connect it straight to your Desktop MB, go to the Bios boot order and have it as the first boot device, boot up and see what you have.

could you please specify which cables and power i would be needing.? can i use the same power cables that are inside the desktop..? or should i plug in the laptop and use the power cable in the laptop.? also shouldnt i attach the HDD into my desktop as a secondary (slave setting) then i could use the OS currently in my desktop to format /recover data from the laptop HDD.
also which data cable do i need to connect the HDD. i think there is an extra slot in the data cable that connects to my desktop HDD.

My Computer

w00t..
somehow i managed to get my hands into the command prompt again..
i booted the system with the restore disks that i had made when i first bought the computer. i have managed to get the minidump file (found it in C:\windows\minidump\)and the ntbtlog.txt from my system./ i transferred it through command prompt into a usb flash drive.
Now, does this help out in anyway..? can my system be fixed.? and id be glad if we could do it whilst also saving my data.
ohh and also on running startup repair i got the message that a patch was preventing the system from repairing itself.. WTF..????
the minidump file i found was dated to 4/4/09.. so am putting up the MEMORY.DMP file instead. the link is:
Download MEMORY.zip, upload your files and earn money.

so bottom line now is.. i am getting the option to restore my entire system to factory settings.. but i am hoping to save atleast my D drive and format just C: . so should i use the command prompt and format c: and reinstall windows..?
