Solved Resetting C-drive allocations to default setting in Vista

To prepare for a dual boot installation (Vista / Ubuntu) I had to allocate space on my C-drive using Vista's 'Disk Management' and 'Shrink Volume' features. Unfortunately, in the process of making the allocation, I mistakenly allocated 40 MB instead of 40 GB. Went back into 'Shrink Volume' to correct the allocation but it apparently cannot increase space. Also tried 'Extend Volume', no luck there either (or maybe I just don't understand how it works). For what it's worth, here's my current C-drive allocations.

144.81 GB NTFS
40.00 MB Unallocated (reserved for Ubuntu) (this is what should have been 40GB)
75.29 GB Primary Partition
3.24 GB Primary Partition
9.49 GB NTFS

I should also mention that I already have Ubuntu installed, so this is actually a re-installation to solve a connection problem I'm having with Ubuntu.

Not sure what to do.

Hello bbbluz,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

A snippet of the Disk Manager would be helpful here. Info here if needed: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/148532-how-use-snipping-tool-vista.html

If I have this right, you should be able to shrink C once again, by the amount you want (40GB) This will create more unallocated space next to the 40 MB you have now. They should combine into one large unallocated space ready to be turned into a volume.

Hope this helps.

Gary

Hi garysgold,

Thanks for your reply! The snipping tool is my best friend!

Unfortunately, my boyfriend came over and took over my project. He fixed it and I'd love to share what he did for learning purposes. But I walked away to give him his space to work his magic! LOL!

I truly appreciate your help!
