Vista issues I can't find specifics for

Hello all,

In advance, thank you for your assistance in this matter. I should have done this a long time ago but I have a bad habit of trying to figure something out myself before I ask for help

So here is my issue.......

My CD drive wasn't working for a while. I can't remember when it began to do this but it has been a while now. I read forum after forum but couldn't find anything specific to my problems.

The CD drive spins the CD, just won't start it to CD. It doesn't matter if it's a CD or DVD.

I ran a "mr. fix it" and it came back and said the dick drive was not detected.
Device manager doesn't list the CD/DVD drive, only WDC WD3200BEVT-60ZCT0 ATA Device. I tried updating the drivers and it says they are all up to date.
There aren't any filters in the Registry Editor. This did catch my eye, don't know what it means. It is located in the Registry Editor.
- Installer32 REG_SZ storprop.dll,DvdClassInstaller

Under System Information I see the following:
- cdfs CD/DVD File System Reader c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdfs.sys File System Driver No Disabled Stopped OK Normal No No
- cdrom CD-ROM Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys Kernel Driver No System Stopped OK Normal No No

I also found these under system information and have no clue if they have to do with my current situation:
- acpi Microsoft ACPI Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\acpi.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- atapi IDE Channel c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- clfs Common Log (CLFS) c:\windows\system32\clfs.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- compbatt Microsoft Composite Battery Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\compbatt.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- ecache ReadyBoost Caching Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\ecache.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- fltmgr FltMgr c:\windows\system32\drivers\fltmgr.sys File System Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- ksecdd KSecDD c:\windows\system32\drivers\ksecdd.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- mountmgr Mount Point Manager c:\windows\system32\drivers\mountmgr.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- msisadrv ISA/EISA Class Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\msisadrv.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- ndis NDIS System Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- partmgr Partition Manager c:\windows\system32\drivers\partmgr.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- pci PCI Bus Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- pciide pciide c:\windows\system32\drivers\pciide.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- spldr Security Processor Loader Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\spldr.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- volmgr Volume Manager Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\volmgr.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- volmgrx Dynamic Volume Manager c:\windows\system32\drivers\volmgrx.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes
- volsnap Storage volumes c:\windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys Kernel Driver Yes Boot Running OK Critical No Yes

Aside from the CD drive, the only issues I have had were with IE 7.

The only programs I had installed were:

- Limewire (removed)
- Nero (removed)

I have an HP dv2945se notebook
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition w/ SP2

One last thing, I try and run the Memory Diagnostic Tool and it gets about 90% through the first of 2 checks and it shuts down. I thought it was doing this due to overheating so I shut it off last night and tried it again this morning and it did the same thing. It wasn't even generating any heat.

I'm at wits end here.... I hope you have enough info and if there is anything I can do please let me know! I greatly appreciate it!!!!!

Have a great day!

Is your BIOS up to date?

If it is and your saying this is a laptop...you may have a overheated and destroyed mainboard...causing memory problems and hardware problems.

Do you still have HP support. If you do I recommend you contact them. They may be able to repair it free of cost if it is determined to be the issue.

Hope this helps.

hello
is this the mr fixit you ran. Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs if not run it see if it helps!

have you looked in disk management to see if its listed there?

start > right click on "computer" choose "manage" clock ok at uac prompt, when new window opens select "disk management" (left hand side) If its there , right click on it > drivers tab and "update driver software" ...good luck

Just as an additional comment. Do not procrastinate, if you are going to contact HP as suggested. Time may be running out for free warranty coverage. I mention this only because of your first comment about the delay trying to solve the initial problem
Good luck

Thank you for your quick response!

I may sound like a dumb a** here but....... What are the BIOS? I have read SEVERAL articles on this but I'm not familiar with the term so I have steered clear of checking it. Could you fill me in and maybe get me a link to a step by step walk through. All the ones I seem to find aren't for my OS or the suggested paths vary so I don't know which one to follow.

I am afraid over heating has caused a problem but I can't remember a time when it was excessively hot. I don't use this computer for much. I surf the web and work on it. I occassionally downloaded a few songs, burnt fewer than 10 CD's and watched MAYBE 5 DVD's..... I dunno..... I will continue to work on it! Once again, thank you......

Kenny:

That was not the "mr. fix it" program I ran earlier but that link seemed to be more specific. It returned two errors:

CD/DVD drive is not detected (not fixed and has a red circle w/ an X)
Media in CD/DVD drive is not readable (HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-T40L ATA Device) and has a yellow triangle w/ an exclamimation point next to the word detected

As for your second suggestion, I follwed that path and it shows my Driver but doesn't give me the option to update it. I ended up going to the connection manager via this path and updating it but it says it's up to date.

Last but certainly not least, My laptop has been out of warranty for a while now. I believe I bought it two years ago :(

What is BIOS is less important than how to access it. While booting up your computer you repeatedly press down on an F key, with Dell it is f12. Every computer manufacrturer has a different key to access, but f2 and f12 seem common. Read your computer manual or research on line, to get the details of your computer.

Basic Input Output System. It is utilized by the computer during boot.
