....after removing Vista......

Installed XP Pro and Vista on separate partitions, hoping to update through Vista to Win 7. Changed strategy and deleted Vista, repartitioned HD.

Now I still get a window at startup that defaults to Vista but gives me options to start XP.

Would like to get rid of that Vista default so I don't have to hawk each reboot.:geek:
Any ideas?

Thanks .
I did not format the Vista drive before repartitioning the HD. There is no visible Drive that displays in My Computer since repartitioning. I don't think that there is anything to format to change the Vista Drive partition.
I thinking that there is 1. a Windows file in System 32 that has Vista information or 2. a Registry entry that defaults to Vista as a choice.

Lol . Put the Vista dvd in the drive. From XP select the Run command type:

dvddriveletter:\boot\bootsect /nt52 sys

then OK.

Looks a bit different in XP - but you get the idea.

Did it run successfully?

Try:

dvddriveletter:\boot\bootsect /nt52 all /force

obviously use your actual dvddriveletter e.g. E:

It did not run, just disappeared from the screen (twice).

Here is my boot.ini from XP:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

In that case, EITHER boot the Vista dvd , windows loading files- select language and keyboard, Next - you get a screen saying "Install Now"- at the bottom of that screen , select "Repair my computer". It searches for installations - click Next, click command prompt, type:

dvdriveletter:\boot\bootsect /nt52 all

then press enter.

Close cmd prompt, restart.

OR , use the /force switch from within XP.

Put the Vista dvd in the drive. From XP select the Run command type:

dvddriveletter:\boot\bootsect /nt52 all /force

When using the Vista process, I do not get a "Repair" option - it goes directly to copying files.
With the XP force process, then is a momentary flash with a screen showing some lines of text that show so quickly that they are not readable.
Reboot still shows Vista a the default choice, but it of course does not load. I do get a follow-up screen; I'll screen shot that and send next.

Hi,

Boot into your XP Install Disk and click Repair your Computer. This will get you into the Recovery Console. Type "fixmbr" without the quotes. Turn off your computer and your problem should be fixed. This will restore your XP boot manager instead of the Vista one. Tell me if this does not work. It should restore your computer so XP is the only option and it therfore does not ask you!

niemiro: Thanks for the suggestion.
Unfortunately, I was "Billy'd" with this computer. It came with a Vista CD, but XP was already installed and I do not have a boot disk.

And now a word of warning for the computer-support dependent OR and now the rest of the story!!
The explanation for the delay in response to the last post is as follows.
I am very grateful for the support form the Vista and the XP community.:geek: I had an issue that bugged me but did not impair function of the OS or any software.
I could get none of the fixes to fix. I ended up using a system restore CD; all this did was reinstall Windows which, of course, would require reinstalling all drivers and other software. Stupid me-----System Restore means fix repair, restore, not re-install to me. One major eye-ball opener was that re-installation of Outlook 2007 did not work - I could not use the *.pst file. I had to run the Driver CD more than once to get the network card drivers found and installed.
So I am back to the original Windows installation and my usual system functions.
Thanks a lot for the help; I'll stay tuned, but you can bet that this support-dependent sole will not be fixin' any PIA in the near future!!:geek:
