Solved USER PROFILE SERVICE service failed the log on

Hello,
I have two user accounts on my PC under vista Home base: Administrator and user

I was just using switch user from user to administrator after entering the password I received the error message

'USER PROFILE SERVICE service falied the log on'
'user profile cannot be loaded'

====
I cannot use 'system restore' as it requires the admin password, and since the above error occurs when inserting the password, System restore' is not effective .
===

I did not notice when such error eventually occurred. As I am always on the user account, I noticed every now and then that I cannot uninstall certain programs despite accepting admin password. The error displayed was the program no longer exists, and the request was whether I wish to remove the shortcut, and again admin is inserted, but the deletion of the respected program is not performed.

I shall be grateful if a solution can be found. System Restore cannot be pursued as I explained above .
Many thanks,
Monia

Hello Brink,
After 'USER PROFILE SERVICE service failed the log on' problem resolved according to the excellent tutorial, I just noticed that I ca no longer see the DVD drive icon, and my antivirus needs reloading. I still have problem with the DVD drive when I try to play any DVD. There is no icon, and the DVD does not play.
I looked at my Device manager for the DVD driver, on the General the following error incured:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available., "
I requested the update and reloading of the driver from the internet but no solution. I did not do 'uninstall' before requesting a reloading an update of the driver

I did this tutorial as well

'how to hide or unhide a Drive in vista' manually ( i.e using method 2 steps 1 to 4, and 6), ' but cannot fulfill the 'NDrives'. Window complains that ' can create value: Error writing to the registry'

The Drive is :
'Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-k17ATA Device

I am very grateful for any assistance.
Thank you ,
kind regards,
Monia

Have you been keeping the system restore points up to date? You may want to go back, with system restore to a point that things were working properly.

Before that, make sure you have no virus. Give a thorough scan using your antivirus, software.

Hi Richard,
May be I did not make myself clear. After fixing the 'user profile...', and then noticing the anti-virus was deactivated, I reloaded the antivirus and did run a complete check. I did not notice my DVD drive icon was absent and nothing get played until yesterday. Hence I cannot do a 'system restore when everything was working properly' since the ' user profile' may have been so far back perhaps 8 months ago or so before recently I noticed that I could not login as 'administrator'. During all this time the DVD drive was working as well as antivirus.
Everything seems to be ok after execuing the 'user profile' solution, and antivirus reload etc, except of my dvd drive.
Anyway, I am excuting another complete check with the antivirus.
Hence I hesitate to head on to a guessing far back system restore which may lead to more problems .
Thank you,
Monia

No, you probably cannot use SR, if you have to go that far back. I will see if I could come up with another solution. Sorry that you are still having problems.

Hello Richard,
The problem is now solved
I took your advice. Window complains further more by simple unistall and reinstall the driver , then I used your link, and did the complete procedure plus the additional info as stated in the
advice DVD drive not detected by Windows Vista - Operating Systems

If you have any third-party CD/DVD-burning software such as Nero or Roxio installed, please temporarily remove them from "Control Panel"-> "Programs and Features".

Step 2 : Delete Filter Drivers
=====================

  1. Click Start, type “regedit” (without the inverted commas) and press ENTER.
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type “Backup” in File Name. Click Save.

    Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named Backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the Backup.reg file.
  4. Highlight this key ({4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), on the right pane and then check if Upperfilters and/or Lowerfilters are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.
  5. Restart the computer.

Step 3 : Reinstall the DVDRW drive
=========================

1. Click Start, type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter.

2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

3. Right-click the DVDRW drive and click Uninstall. Restart the computer. "
Thank you for directing and also to MrChris
