Backup in safe mode?

GPU on motherboard failed, now I can only boot up in safe mode. The laptop isn't worth repairing but I would like to back up to dvd or usb then restore on a new system using windows 7. Can I do this with only safe mode? HP Pavilion laptop with vista 32.

Hello,

It depends on what you want to backup. If all you want to save is your music, pics, etc, no problem. Actually, you will have a difficult time backing up anything in Normal mode that cannot be backed up in Safe Mode.

Any questions, just ask. We will be happy to assist you, if you need help.

Sure, give it a whirl. Some programs may not run in Safe Mode, but you can copy files and the like.

Worst case scenario, it doesn't work. No harm done.

What you can do is clone your old hard drive to your new drive using cloning tools like Clonezilla.

ok I've been reading the tutorials for Clonezilla and that apears to be a good solution. I plan to backup on an external usb drive. Will I encounter problems restoring the vista based backup on to a new widows 7 system?

Yes. Clonezilla does a clone; it is a complete copy of your hard drive sector for sector.

Try running Windows Easy-Transfer, and creating a backup.
