Vista64 and 32 dual failed

Hi guys, I tried to go over the forum to find a similar problem as mine and I did, except they are different in detail and results...so i decided to state the issue here hoping u can shed some light.

ok, I already have a running vista 64bit on drive C:

Earlier tonight I popped in vista 32bit hoping to install it on D: (separate physical drive) which had an Xp pro on it that i want to get rid off.

When I chose to install the x86 vista on D: it all went smooth. the pc restarted and I saw the new title on the boot page. after that, as it was finishing up the installation, it asked me to "start" vista after the welcome page so i did, and there it happened....

suddenly the pc restarted and I would continuously from that point get a message on reboot saying "vista loader" and under it "fall back" and finally "boot failed!"

I tried reloading the dvd and repairing but that didnt work. as a result the pc wont go in my original 64bit or the 32bit.

finally, i had to overwrite the freshly installed 32bit with a fresh installation of the 64bit on drive D: which gave me access to my original 64bit on C: at least.

now the question is: what happened there?
second question: how do I successfully install vista32bit now on D: as dual boot with the 64bit on C: ?

sorry for the long thread...help will be much appreciated.

Hello,

Try booting from the DVD and doing a Custom Installation. The best I can guess is that maybe the DVD is scratched, or some little bug happened.

Basically, try again. If it fails again, we can go from there.

thanks jonathan but the installation did take place and the dvd is new so it cant be about it being scratched.

i'm quite discouraged about repeating the same steps. not quite sure what u mean by custom installation...customize what? clarify please

If you boot from the DVD and click Install, you will be offered the choice between a Custom and Upgrade installation. Choose the Custom one for a clean install.

You won't even be able to do an Upgrade. You will know what I mean when you get there.

hi again,

thank u so much guys for the replies..I really do appreciate it.

@Jonathan King..clear now and thats what i did. but here's the thing. what i did is that i popped the dvd from my vista64bit to do the installation, i didnt boot and "press a key"...could that be the cause of the problem?

@stoneys-nutz i tried this before and it worked when i was installing xp. i thought im doing the same with vista

@richc46 thank you for the kind words mate and the link. I will give this another shot.

but can u guys confirm if its an absolute no no to do an installation on another drive using the dvd from an os rather than from dos restart? or is that not important?

cheers

You mean running setup.exe from the desktop instead of booting from it?

That is fine. You just can't make changes to partitions unless you boot from the disc.

Why not disconnect the 64bit install drive and do the 32 on the 2nd drive ? ?
That way the bootloader isn't involved and you use the BIOS to determine which drive to boot ? ?
