Quick Launch Toolbar Submenu Creation

I hope this hasn't been covered in a previous thread; I've spent the better part of an hour looking through tutorials and whatnot seeing if this has already been covered; no luck. So, here goes:

I would like to have a shortcut to my C: drive in my Quick Launch toolbar act as a menu with subfolders after clicking the chevrons. I have already tried the various ways of adding the shortcut to the toolbar, but they all seem to open C: in a new window as opposed to operating as a menu a la the All Programs menu. Is there some option that I have to tinker with in order to get it to work the way I want to?

Thanks.

Bumping the topic.

I'll try to add on to my previous post: Basically I want a shortcut to C: in my Quick launch toolbar to act as a regular folder so as to be able to browse it via cascading folders. Whenever I add the shortcut, it only works as a link.

Thanks for the help.

unlock taskbar, open explorer to picture attached, right click on "C" drive and drag to taskbar area then lock.

I was just gathering my screenshots when I see that pacinitaly has already responded with a solution. But, I'll post mine anyhow.

1. Right click on the quick launch toolbar > toolbars > new toolbar
Quicklaunchtoolbar1.jpg

2. New toolbar - choose a folder (can be root of a drive) or user, etc...

3. Toolbar opens with cascading behavior that I think you were looking for!

Thank you for the replies, guys.

Here's the tricky part. Both pacinitaly and Dick Jagger have half the idea right that the other is missing. pacinitaly made it so a shortcut appears in the Quick Launch toolbar, however, it does not cascade. Dick made a new toolbar altogether that DOES cascade. I am trying to keep the cascading folders within the Quick Launch toolbar without making a new toolbar altogether. I know this is possible because I've done it before; I just don't remember the process or if I did anything special with folder properties or anything like that. I don't remember having to tweak my registry or anything of that nature, so I don't think it's THAT complex.

Thanks again, folks.

I see what you are asking to do now. I got it to work for a folder, but am not sure if it can be done at the root of a drive. The key is in how you create the shortcut to the folder.

1. open Network Shortcuts: go Start > shell:nethood

2. open new explorer window and navigate to folder you wish to add to the quick launch toolbar, alt + left click and drag to the Network Shortcuts folder. There should be a message saying "Create link in Network Shortcuts? Yes. This creates a shortcut with a filetype of "File" instead of "Shortcut". This is what needs to be moved to the Quick Launch toolbar!

3. Right click on the Quick Launch toolbar and select open folder.

4. left click drag the shortcut file from the Network Shortcuts folder to the Quick Launch toolbar folder

5. close all open folders.

6. the shortcut will open with cascading behavior if you hover the pointer just to the right of the icon and click; and can open a new exporer window if you click on the icon itself.

In your screen capture, I don't see the shortcut file you created. Does cascading work for you for other folders outside of the Quick Launch? If not, you may have to enable cascading via regedit.

go Start > regedit
Browse to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
right click in the registry > new > DWORD (32Bit) Value
Type CascadeFolderBands and set it to 1.

Hmm... Is the shortcut that you moved to the Quick Launch folder a "shortcut" or a "file"?

It looks like the shortcut not only needs to be a "File" but it must be created via alt + left click and drag to Network Shortcuts so that it "Create(s) link in Network Shortcuts", then it can be moved to the Quick Launch folder location. Anyway, I'd like to see if TestSubject415 can get it with this method. Cheers.

I just tried this with a shortcut to the root of the C: drive and it works just the same as it does to a folder. (I thought previously that it might only worked as cascading browsing starting from a folder, but you can add the same type of shortcut file to a drive;))
