Can't unzip downloaded files

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and despite having tried lots of suggestions and followed tutorials posted on this site, I cannot unzip downloaded files - these being simple documents or spreadsheets. The zipped folder is displayed and I can choose settings to extract all files but once i browse to the extracted folder it is empty. There are no error messages. I see in my file associations that .zip is not there but have already used the tutorials to restore and re-associate the zip files with the built in utility. The only associations are for .zfsendtotarget and .zipenx. A month or so ago, I got so annoyed with this I installed Winzip but this didn't work either!

I'm using Windows Home Premium and IE8, if that's any help. I do hope someone can help me as I'm getting incredibly frustrated... Thanks

Development :-(

Ran the system file checker as suggested by Kenny111111 and it got to 77% before saying 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation'. Could this be significant? Maybe using a free utility would be better methinks, but it's a shame I can't get this one working again as that's what it's there for!

Thanks Richc46. Unfortunately I did not get a Windows DVD with my system (Acer laptop). I have created a restore disk. Unless I've read it wrong, I won't be able to do a repair install from this. There seems to be nothing else wrong as my laptop works fine for everything else. Would you agree that the only other solution would be to download 7zip, for example?

Actually, I was researching free unzip software. I will post my results. I do agree, if that is the only problem, may be best to leave it alone.

I go along with your suggestion, it seems that 7-zip may be one of the better unzip utilities.

I have read so many posts from people that tried to correct a small problem or improve the OS and the results were disaster. Try 7-zip, that truly may be the best course of action.

this has nothing to do with 7zip, but along the lines of the recovery disc.. how old is laptop/desktop?
did it come with sp1?
did you have the option (when it was new) to make the recovery disc?

just wondering there always nice to have..

Sorry Kenny111111 - didn't see your reply until I had posted. The laptop is less than a year old. It didn't come with SP1 but it now has SP2 as well. The recovery disks were made when it was fairly new as I was prompted to do so. Shame they don't provide the OEM software on DVD though.
Thanks for your help
Andrea
