Moving Mobo and Vista to another machine

I would like to move my current mobo and my Vista home premium to another machine. I have to do a clean install of Vista as the target machine has XP installed.

I noticed that under computer properties the Product key is an OEM key. This key is different from the key that is on the back of the CD box with the Vista software . The key at the rear of the CD box is the same one as the back up key I extracted .

Since the mobo and vista is move as a pair , will I run into activation problems?

Thanks

I think that there is a chance that you will have a situation.

When you install, do not give your key number and do not check the box for automatic activation.

Use the system, install your programs etc. When you are happy, activate.
No problem, good.

Problem, just call the number that you will be given, activate by phone

Still a problem, just speak to the rep that will get on the line. I promise, he will be agreeable and extend every courtesy. He will activate you.

Good luck

The license key (OEM type) is usually tied to the mobo. So if you move both together, there should be no problem. The system could not tell the difference because all the other system components are ancillary.
If it is a genuine MS licanse, then there is no problem to move the OS anyhow (as long as it runs only on one system).

TKs for the inputs. Yes this Vista OS will run on only one system. Which key should I use ? The OEM key or the one on the CD box (which is identical to the one I extracted from Vista)

If you are installing Vista, use the Vista key. If I understand correctly, the target computer had XP and an OEM number. If I did not get the facts correctly, just repost.

In any event, if you do the install as I explained in the first post; worst case scenario, you have to speak to a rep, if you used the wrong number.

Richc46, I think you misunderstood my first post. what I tried to say is this:

I want to move the mobo and Vista OS ( OEM) from Machine #1 to Machine# 2 . Machine 2 has Win XP ( non OEM)

The Vista OS on Machine #1 has an OEM Prod ID ( xxxx-OEM_xxxxx-xxxx ) shown in the Control Panel/System screen. This key is different from the Product key pasted on the back of the Vista CD box. The Product Key on the back of the CD box is the same as the key that I obtained when I extracted it from Vista OS using an Application called ABR.exe. So I think this is the key I should use.... correct?

As you mentioned, in the worse case I just have to call the support phone number to activate it

Guess what, it is much easier when I understand the question LOL. In any event, you have to use the Vista Key as that is the OS that you want to use. You really should not have any problems and at worst, it will only be a challange and not really a problem.

Every singel poster that had contact with the activatiion rep commented how surprised they were by the undestanding and helpfulness that they were shown. I guess, it only makes sense. Microsoft needs the key to stop counterfeit copies off the market, they do not want to scare customers away because of it.

If your DVD is an upgrade DVD, you may want to post back so that I can get you the clear and consicise tutorial, on the best way to install. If you are not familiar with the process you may also want to go to YouTube for a visual demonstration.

If there is any other way that I can help you, just post.

Well, this is the last post for the night. Tomorrow up early to shovel a foot of snow (NY Area). Take care.
