cursor behaving erratically

Three days ago the cursor on my (non laptop) PC windows vista home premium began to behave erratically. When I type it skips back to a previous line and inserts text there before notice what is happening. When at rest it seems to pop up unwanted window panels (not advertisements). I have reverted to a early safe point without success. The mouse is a logitech and I think I have updated the driver. I have checked the registry with uniblue and the problem is as bad as ever. Can anyone suggest how to sort this out? Thankyou

Sounds like a minor problem that can be corrected. Lets make sure it stays that way. To be sure it is not something major. Download and use malwarebytes after a thorough virus scan.

If this happened two days ago, why not just try a quick system restore from 3 days ago. It may not work, but it will not hurt. If it does work you have an easy fix.

Malwarebytes.org

Most of all, I wish you good luck.

Thank you for replies. Kenny The mouse is not wireless. Logitech model RX 250. I have used the disk to try to reinstall driver without improvement. Richard : I have done system restore from some time ago without success. I have made a restore point following your advice. I have tried to down load malware bytes three times but the file is always corrupted. (I have a very slow connection) Would the paid version load more reliably?

Finally got malware bytes and scanned computer. It took three hours but found nothing so at least it eliminates malware.

Other contacts I have had suggest it is a windows update problem messing up drivers; others say it is interference from the touchpad which is clearly not the case since it is not a laptop. Have you any further ideas? The problem makes it difficult to concentrate on anything and all tasks take twice as long- even typing this!

If everything fails then try to wipe the drive and reinstall everything.

One time I got this killer Virus that would not even let me use my programs or let me download anything.

I wiped the entire drive and reinstalled everything and it was like new.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately I cannot wipe an reinstall easily as the supplier of the PC did not provide disk for all programs. He had an original manufacturer's licence or something like that.

Lets not ignore the obvious.

In addition to the Malwarebytes, run an antivirus scan.

Can you borrow a mouse from someone, see if it works?

Check the graphics card, try to reset it.

Want to try the easy fixes before trying something more drastic.

Mate!

There is no need to fork out hard-earned $$$.$$s just yet. Another scan could be in order though, but this time I recommend saving SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware. AntiSpyware. AntiMalware. to your Desktop and running it from there. A full scan can take up to 90 minutes, but is well worth it.

I also agree with richc46's lines of thought, and wouldn't do anything too radical just yet, as one member has suggested.

If you go to here; Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit ......this little program saved to you Desktop and run from there, will give you all the information that you need to complete your System Specs, accessed through your User CP, shown at the top of the page. A few minutes spent on that, can save hours in sorting out problems, later.

Best of luck....

I have just had ten minutes of problem free work. I feel a bit stupid now after three days of bad tempered frustration. I have removed the graphic tablet. I think a cable may have been moving across it (possibly mouse cable) If this was indeed the problem and the fault stays away then it is solved . Many thanks to you and all your fellow members for advising patience and a reasoned approach rather than taking a hammer to it!
