New here! Display freeze - R300 not responding

Apologize in advance. I am new to this. I have had a Gateway notebook for about two years. Hardly ever used it. It was too slow. Generally use my computer at work. Got it out and started to use it. Discovered it had only 512 ram. Best Buy installed 2 gig. Made a huge difference. Had to install over 90 updates. Took all day. Any way everything was working fine until last night when the display started to freeze. Could not do anything. Had to restart. Did it several times. I noticed that a notice saying "display driver R300 not responding" was also occuring. It said the problem was corrected but then it would do it again. Is all of this connected? I was only surfing and changing some settings, etc. What can I do to fix this?

Roll back the display driver through Device Manager.

From the Start Menu white bar, type Device Manager and select it from the pop-up menu. You didn't bother to say what model computer you have so I have no idea if you have an integrated graphics chip, a media accelerator, a dedicated graphics board or what.

Anyway, open up "Display Adapters." There should be one factory/stock adapter. Right-click on it and select "Properties" and then "Driver." You want to roll back if there is an option for that. If there isn't an option for that, you need to restore the factory driver from the manufacturer. You need the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) driver disk that came with the computer or you need to download the display driver(s) from the Gateway website. If you download the driver(s) from the website, "Save As" and "Run as administrator" the installation program.

You might also need an older "Generic PnP Monitor" driver from Microsoft. You see this in the "Monitor" part of Device Manager categories. Or, you might not have the newest driver and you may need it.
