I cannot open any files... help please!

I cannot open any programs or .exe files on my computer without a box appearing stating that

WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE

To open this file windows needs to know what programs you want to use to open it etc etc

It then gives me 2 options either to USE the web service to find what will open it

or

select a program from a list of installed programs.

This puzzles me because the programs im trying to open like SKYPE are in themselves the programs that open by themselves.

What can i do to fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How long has this been going on? Could you be infected with malware? Do a scan with Malwarebytes.

It has just started happening today.

I downloaded the program that you suggested but when i try to install it a box pops up saying

C:\users\alastair\downloads\mbam-setup.exe

application not found. This happens with almost everything i try to download and install

Is there a way around this?

Yes, do as Richard suggested and run in Safe Mode.

When i try to run a system restore the same problem occurs as with when i try to run .exe files and programs

How can i get the system restore to operate if i can get it to execute?

However i dont have a Vista Cd/DVD.

Vista came pre-installed with my laptop that i brought from best buy.

Can I use the Repair Install for Vista without a CD/DVD of Vista?
