    Keyboard stuck in "shift" mode

this is my first post so please be patient if i don"t present information correctly> also< please overlook my punctuation errors since that is the nature of this post> i can"t use the enter key so i can"t start new paragraph either> as you can see by my info so far< my keyboard is displaying the character that should be displayed when the shift key is depressed> i cannot type any numbers< commas< periods< etc> here is how it began: i have a toshiba a:two fifteen laptop with vista sixty four os> i spilled a small amount of water on it and quickly turned it upside down and then used a towel to wipe the entire keyboard> it appears that while wiping with the towel< i depressed something that screwed everything up> at least that is what i am hoping> the sticky key sound came on when i turned the system back on> i have gone into _ease of access_ and none of the boxes have been checked> i did a system restore back before this started and that didn"t change it> also< i have tried to use the on screen keyboard and it does the same thing as the real keyboard> does anybody have a clue what else i can do?

To me it sounds like the key may be gone.

    Try two things

Hit Cap Lock see it that changes anything

Borrow a keyboard and see it that helps. If you are using a laptop, without a separate keyboard, I do not know what else to suggest.

Hi TNLADY and welcome to Vista Forums

It sounds like some of the water has penetrated the keyboard and is shorting out either (or both) of the Shift keys. Have you tried using a hair dryer to see if you can dry out your keyboard?

the caps lock is on as i type this now> if i turn the caps lock off< I TYPE IN ALL CAPS BUT STILL CAN"T USE THE NUMBER AND PUNCTUATION KEYS> in other words< the caps lock is working backwards> i have not tried an external keyboard but since the on_screen keyboard is behaving the same as the regular keyboard< does that suggest that it is not a keyboard problem? this is so frustrating> by the way< thank you so much for responding>

I originally thought that the keyboard was gone, Dwarf agrees. I think that the only sure way is to borrow a keyboard and see if it works. Fortunately, keyboard are relatively cheap.

That is normal behaviour between the Shift and Caps Lock keys. They are mutually exclusive, but this behaviour only extends to the letters and not the symbols. Think of it in this way - you can use the Caps Lock key to set the case in which to type (lower/upper) and then use the Shift key to reverse the case when required.

I'm unsure whether Richard's suggestion of trying a new keyboard will work because, although laptops can be used with an external mouse, I don't know if they can be used with external keyboards.

I would try my previous suggestion and see if you can thoroughly dry out your keyboard.

Well< i tried an external keyboard and it behaved the same as the laptop keyboard> the characters displayed are what would display if the shift key were depressed> so is there anything left to try? i can"t imagine what would make it do this>

Re: Keyboard stuck in "shift" mode

Sorry, that all attempts at fixing the keyboard have failed. I think the only option is to bring it in for repair or maybe even buy a new one. This does not sound like a software problem, it sounds like hardware that requires technical knowhow.

That being said, I would contiune to try to dry it out with the hair dryer, but do not let the keyboard get too hot. Then leave it alone for a couple of days, and see what happens.
