Help! I have an Acer and I have been using it for months. Browsing the web, IMing, torrents and whatnot. HOWEVER, about a month ago, my internet connected BUT my broswers (Firefox and IE) would not connect to any websites I typed in nor would Windows Live work. My uTorrent works and every other laptop in the house. I am connecting wirelessly btw, but i have tried plugging it in to through the Cable. What should I do?

You'll have to post back with a lot more details, someone should then be able to help you.
Just telling us you have an Acer running Vista isn't a lot of help really. Is this a desktop/laptop what security are you running, what error messages, if any, do you get.
You say you're connecting via wireless then say you've tried plugging it in through cable, but you didn't say what happens when plugging it in, does it then work or what.

You say this happened a month ago so can you tell us what you have tried to resolve the problem during this time.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you can post back with all the details the experts need so they can help you fix your problem.

It is an Acer Aspire 5050 running Vista Home Edition. It is a laptop. When I plugged it into through the cable, it did not work. Over the course of the month, I tried a virus scan, running diagnostics, throwing it out the window (just kidding) and incessantly clicking refresh and I have tried turning off my firewall Error messages that show up:

When I run a windows diagnostics on it, it says there is no problem

When I troubleshoot with windows live, it says "Failed to connect to the server"

IE says that it cannot connect with the internet.

An hour ago, it actually worked for the first time, my Windows Live but then my computer froze.

What should I do?

I'll ask the glaringly obvious - Have you spoken at all with your Internet Service Provider? The least that they can do, is give you a report on the status and integrity of your service. It has been known, that a link can be maintained, albeit a little slower, with a connection that is working at only 8% of true efficiency.

In support of what Joan asked you;

  • What are your Firewall Error messages telling you?
  • What sort of Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus security are you running.
  • What sort of anti-virus scan did you run?
  • When you plugged in the Ethernet cable, was that 'live'? I've found that one way to establish a good connection by 'hard-wire', is to turn the Modem off, then connect the Ethernet to the port on the Laptop and switch the Modem back on. Your indicator lights should tell you soon enough what the situation is, and the Internet Icon in your Notification Tray, likewise. Mouse over that to see what the status is, and if necessary, click on it and do a 'Diagnosis and Repair.'
Come back with some feedback, plus it would help the helpers, if you use some of the time that you are not now on the Internet, by going to your User CP [top of page] to fill in your System Specs. It sure doesn't help at all not knowing what we are dealing with. A System Spec that just says 'OS Vista' only confirms the reason for you posting here in the first place.

Edit:

I've just had another thought.

Have you tried uninstalling both Internet Explorer [what Version are you using?] and Mozilla Firefox [Version?], and reinstalling both from scratch. I had a recent glitch with FF3.6 after a MS Update, but a similar process fixed it.

Yes, obviously I asked my ISP. They can't figure out why its only my laptop not working while all other machines are fully functional. And when I plug in my ethernet cable, it is still the same problem. All the diagnostics say the exact same thing as it did when it was connected wirelessly. The icon on the bottom shows the globe when its connect wirelessly and when its connected through a cable. Yes, when I attached the cable, I attached it live. I tried reinstalling both browsers by grabbing the setup from another computer, I tried a system restore. There is no firewall error. The firewall is turned off, therefore there is no error. My antivirus is an ESET NOD32 Business edition 3.0.621.0 The type of scan i ran was Computer scan of every single drive.

And I would love to edit my OS specs, except I use four computers in my house, which computer's data should I fill out? What if I have a question for another machine

Just for chuckles I would open a command prompt and enter

"nslookup www.microsoft.com"

(without the quotes)

and tell us what it says
