Uninstalling GRUB

All right, so I've gotten my self in one mighty big mess.
I've been Dual-Booting Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit and Linux Ubuntu 9.04 for a while now. And just today I decided I didn't want Ubuntu any more. So I loaded up in to Vista and deleted the Ubuntu partition. I then extended the Vista partition to fill up the new 70 GB of unallocated space.

After running a Defrag I restarted my computer, but it still tries to load GRUB 1.5. And every time it end up getting Error 22. I can no longer access Windows and I'm on these forums thanks to a Linux Live-CD.

I need a way to get rid of GRUB for good.

My PC Specs:
80GB Hard Drive + 160GB Hard Drive
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Upgrade Disc
2GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS

Intel Pentium D 2.66 GHz

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,

Do not worry, boot into your Vista DVD and click Repair (your computer) Let startup repair finish, then see if the issue is resolved. If this does not fix your problem, see this website, it has every step all on one page: Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki

There is a download link to another webpage where you can download a Vista CD with repair features only if you do not have a Vista DVD with repair features.

Hello Grykus,
Is this what you are looking for ?.

You can use dd command from Linux itself (it removes partition table):

# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=1

From this site.

How to uninstall GRUB

Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

I've already tried both those options, when I use the Vista Startup Repair it says No Problems Found. Yet the problem still persists. As for the dd Command when I use it literally nothing happens.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys.

If you have someone who can download and burn a CD for you this SuperGrub fix may work:

UninstallGRUB - Super Grub Disk Wiki

Supposedly it marks the Windows partition active and puts code in the MBR to boot that partition. Sounds like it may work without a saved MBR. When doing these mixed OS setups it's always a good idea to get a utility you can boot from USB to put a saved MBR back on. Copying the MBR is easy, a driver on the USB that recognizes your HD controller can be sticky though.

Oh, I almost forgot. With anything bootable, you can't find anything these guys don't know about:

http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?

I asked there and they showed me how to put my Windows boot manager program on a USB key drive. You boot the USB and get the same menu as when you boot your healthy HD. It's particular to the PC you made it from though. Kind of imitates the old Linux boot diskette that would load your Linux from HD after booting the floppy. Very cool.
