I want to enable system restore but it eats so much space. I enabled it for a few weeks and it kept growing it got to about 35 gbs of space being tooken up for system restore. How much space does it need if you just let it run?

A direct answer to your question, it will eventuall fill the entire partiton allocated to restore. When the partition is full the oldest points are deleted. I think that a potential solution to your problem is to reduce the size of the partition, used for restore.

thank you whats the point of system restore anyway does it create backups of just your system files and registry's or does it do more?

My Computer

System Restore backs up the operating system including registry. In the event of corruption, user error, virus, etc you can go back to an earlier time. I think that it is a great feature.

i see so it just backs up the system components not programs or media that you also have. To minimize the size of system restore can you just do a backup of your system now and then turn it off leaving just 1 system restore date? because i dont see why i need multiple system restore dates 5 or 6 or 7 that eat away plenty of space

My Computer

It is always good to have older dates. You may have malware now and not realize it for 3 weeks, you want to be able to go back to that point.

What you can do, if you like, you can turn off System Restore, now and then. Every time you turn if off all the points are erased. I do not want to do that, but everyone has different needs.
