Delete file opened in another program

I tried to delete a template in "My Templates) in "Word". It would not go the the recyle bin as a file was opened in another program.

I discovered that when I went Word I get Document 1.
I then click the Office Button.
Click on close and get a faded screen.
Click the Office Button again and the only options are:
Open
Open from Office Live
Save to Office Live

Is this the open file? If it is how do I delete it?

If not can anyone solve my problem?

You will need to completely close Word for you to be able to delete anything to do with Word. But to make sure it is gone, boot into Safe Mode (Getting into Windows Safe Mode - ignore the 'Not able to boot into Windows', that is not your case. Go to the section below the first picture. That is how to boot into safe mode.) and then delete your file (Don't open Word at all).

I went to Safe Mode. Where do I go from there? How do I find the open file? I do not know the name of it. I went through the procedure to delete the template and got the same response.

If you navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates while in safe mode, you should see your template. Delete while Word is closed.

I tried to follow your instructions and got lost again. I am using Vista.

I double clicked on computer in safe mode and got a screen showing hard drive disks. No files listed. I then left clicked on C Drive and got a list of folders.

Where am I going wrong.

Also: How do I know where the file is. The template says Blank Document and file is opened in another program.

That list of folders is what you are looking for.Domii said that you should click next on the one that says program files, then after that microsoft office. Every time you click on one of those folders, it opens so you can see what is inside. Then you click on the next folder that you want.

I got as far as Templates but could not find what I was looking for when I clicked on it. Lost again.

But

I have been looking on the computer and by going to Start, typing Templates in the start search, clicking on the template folder, I arrived at Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates.

On the list I found Normal.dotm.

I right clicked on it and deleted it and sent it to the recycle bin.

When I checked My Templates the template for Blank Document disappeared.

When I re-checked Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates Normal.dotm was still there and everytime I delete it and send it to the Recycle Bin it reappears again.

Why is this?

I spoke to soon.

When I checked again the template also had returned. How can it return when the Recyle Bin deleted it?

There's another way to approach this. I occasionally get some kind of a corruption in Word where the system thinks the file is open in another location when it really isn't. I'm not sure if this is the exact same problem, but if it is, here's the solution (that I found after agonizing lengthy searching and much help from other posters). The 1st paragraph is preliminary. The 2nd paragraph is the real solution:

To Close or Delete File with Error Message “File is Open in Another Location” Open file. With file open, go to Task Manager, Applications. Highlight the file in Task Manager and “End Process.” Then go to Windows Explorer and you should be able to delete the file. (If Task Manager doesn't see that file open, go into your Start menu's Recent Items list, select that file, and with that file open, go back into Task Manager. Highlight that file in Task Manager and “End Process.” Then go to Windows Explorer and you should be able to close or delete the file. You may have to repeat this process several times, each time selecting the next most recent item in the Recent Items list.)

If it doesn’t work, go back into Task Manager, Processes + close explorer.exe. Then restart explorer.exe by going back into Task Manager, and in File section, select New Task (Run). Type explorer.exe (or C:\Windows\explorer.exe) in the Run box (it may be there already). Click Okay.

PS When you close explorer.exe you will lose your Desktop. Don't get scared (as I did!). It will be perfectly restored when you restart explorer.exe!

I tried to do as you said but it is still there.

You said "with file opened". It is a dialog box showing templates that I am trying to delete and I do not know which program the other file is opened in.

When I am in the task manager "Applications" it does not show the file and in Processes I do not know which one if any to try.

Sorry to be so thick

So, are you saying your are trying to delete the dialog box but not the template? That doesn't make sense, because the dialog box is only a secondary effect --- essentially a symptom of the system thinking there is another copy of the template somewhere. If the template is really deleted, the dialog box (error message) wouldn't appear. In other words, once you correct the problem, by deleting what the system thinks is the template, the dialog box/error message should automatically disappear.

The template that the system is seeing might be a former version of the file (the template) that is still there, not the current version (unless you created a "copy" which is doesn't sound like you did). If that is the case, closing explorer.exe should solve the problem because it essentially refreshes and updates all of Windows Explorer. (And by the way, have you tried to actually "refresh" Windows Explorer (by clicking the Refresh button in your top toolbar)?

And, are you saying you did delete explorer.exe but the template and/or dialog box still reappeared?

I am not trying to delete the dialog box. I am trying to delete the template.

Apparantly the template cannot be deleted as the file it is opened in Microsoft Office Word.

How do I find the file as My Templates is in Word also.

What do I do now?

Did you go into Task Manager and delete explorer.exe? If not, do that, (following the instructions above) and it should solve your problem.

I already tried your two solutions (message l4) and solution 2 again but I still get the same response as my messages (No 12 & 13)

My problem is finding the open file. The template is in Word and the file is open in Word.

Going to Task Manager and deleteting and reinstalling explorer.exe is not working.

Any more suggestions?

Still trying to find "file opened in another program"

When I go to Document/Properties. It tells me there are 6 files. There are only 5 listed in Documents.

Can anyone tell me where the missing file is likely to be?
