Hi. I'm running Vista Home Premium 64bit, and my system has been rock solid for over a year and a half - literally no issues, no crashes, nothing.
Recently (last month or so) my computer has taken to freezing when it gets to the login screen. What I mean by this is, it will display the windows loading bar (with (c) Microsoft underneath it), this screen will disappear, then - nothing. Black screen.
Once every say 6 or 7 tries (it's random), the windows loading bar will load, the screen will go black - then it flashes off and on, and the login screen will display absolutely fine as it should! From then on, I can use my computer normally, for any length of time. Can play games, browse the net, torrent, listen to music, no issues. When I shut it off, the process begins again.
I'm wondering if it's an issue with updates, since every time I go to turn off my computer, it tells me there are updates to install. I select "install updates then shut down", but every time I boot up again, it still says there are updates. Surely there shouldn't be a new set every day.
For the record I have:
- Tried to boot into last known good configuration - doesn't make a difference
- Tried a repair reinstallation - issue persisted.
- Booted into safe mode (which works every time - leading me to think it's a graphics card issue), including disabling all startup programs - when I boot back normally, the issue persists
- Maybe this is it - uninstalled my display device and booted windows normally, in which case windows boots just fine. Once I reinstall the display adapter + drivers, the issue returns
- Upgraded my video card drivers to the latest version, as well as tried the oldest version that came with my computer. The issue persists in either case.
So yeah, am at my wits end. Anyone have a similar issue?
