Stymied on clean install attempt (CD driver needed?)

When I try to start a clean install from a Windows Vista DVD, it asks for a CD/DVD driver...

I want to perform a clean install on a new, unformatted HDD on my laptop using my OEM Windows Vista (32 bit) installation DVD. It boots from the DVD ("Windows is loading files. . ."), and evidently creates a RAM disk "X". The first screen hsa me select my language (English), and I click "Next". The next window has "Install now->" in the center and at the bottom left if has the "What to know..." and "Repair your computer" selections. If I click "Install now" the system is busy for a moment, and then a "Load Driver" window appears. The box says, "A required CD/DVD drive device is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, lease insert it now." It goes on to say that I can take the Windows installation media out of the CD/DVD device if necessary to access the driver. Only, the system will now access the CD/DVD drive, and I am stuck, dead in the water.

I had previously screwed up my operating system and had been unable to boot, which is why I was reinstalling Windows. I had hoped to use the installation disk to repair Vista and I accessed the "Repair your computer" selection and tried all the options without success. I was able to get to the command prompt and look at the C drive, and I copied the drivers CD to the HDD using another system by putting the HDD into an external drive enclosure. I then tried to reinstall Vista to the old HDD again, and, when the "Load Driver" screen appeared, I pointed the system to the driver folder on the C drive (the system saw the C and the X drives), and each subfolder, but nothing I tried satisfied it. At that point, I thought I would try a new HDD in case there was something corrupting the process on the original drive at the start of the boot process, but I had the same result, and reported in the first paragraph.
