cannot get past startup repair...please help

Starting today I tried to turn on my pc and I get the startup repair screen. It does a quick scan and says "windows cannot repair this computer automatically". It gives me the option to send the info to Microsoft or don't send, I tried both and both take to an option to finish or cancel. Finish shuts down the pc and cancel restarts. This seems like a never ending cycle, I cannot get to the desktop to use my computer.

My girlfriend said she would notice microsoft office would uninstall randomly which has never happened before, and we also keep our pc on at night and she said it recently started turning off itself. She thinks it may have started when we started putting music onto our mytouch phones with the usb wire and we charge our phones while it stays connected to the of.

I'm not sure what to do. Also Im not sure of which uptdates were installed since they are automatically done.Here is a list of the problem details it gives m after the short startup repair:

I tried going into safe mode but it just takes me to the startup repair again.

I'm not very good with fixing computers but I'm going to try the last known good configuration setup.

It shouldn't hurt anything. If you can't run it from booting the HD use the install disc as rich suggested. Chances are if it's a virus or a bad fix/update, the restore point will roll it back before it got fouled up.

If you can afford an external USB drive it's a good idea to make image backups in case your system becomes unbootable. There are several free and paid image backup programs. With USB 3.0 coming out you should be able to pick up cheap USB 2.0 drives as they start dumping them.

Most of the backup programs have wizards for doing the backup and restore. You don't have to be technically skilled to use them. With an external drive, you start the backup image going, then go make a sandwich. It's totally hands off once you kick it off.

After the startup repair finishes it brings up the finish or cancel buttons but it all gives me 2 links which are view diagnostic and repair details or view advanced options for system recovery and support.

Not sure if any of this would help.

I also don't have an install disc as vista was installed on my pc when I bought it.

If I was to buy an external hd to backup my files would there be a way to access and put them on there since I can't get onto my of at all?

Method one is for no DVD

Method 2 uses the DVD

Also, ive been to that system recovery options screen. Ive tried the windows memory diagnostic tool to check for memory hardware errors..nothing came up as it scanned but then took me back to the infamous startup repair screen.

If you know someone who can download an image and burn a disc for you, you could try this to get a repair disc:

One of the options is to run System Restore(which would be to use last known good.)

That way you are not booting from the HD. You have a better chance of getting the restore off the dime.

I did a system restore to the last date it allowed me to which was March 1st and I finally got to my desktop, so that worked. I have a feeling this may happen again. I'm not sure what caused it or how I can determine what did and how to recent it again
