Solved Mouse problems

My Logitech mouse has started to misbehave. Fairly soon after logging on it becomes virtually unresponsive to movement, button clicking, wheel turning etc. If it works at all, it takes several clicks to take effect. I'm pretty much having to use the keyboard now.

It's not batteries or a poor wireless connection.

Looking at Device Manager, there are 2 HID compliant mouse entries for some reason and 3 drivers for each. One seems to be from Kaspersky (klmouflt unticked) and 2 from Microsoft (mouclass and mouhid both ticked).

After an indeterminate time the mouse starts working again.

I have another issue which seemed to arise around the same time. The log on screen comes up soon enough after powering on the PC but after logging in the welcome screen stays up for some time. Sufficiently long eg over a minute, that the event viewer shows a winlogon warning. The only program in my startup is Kaspersky. Is there a way to tell what is happening while the windows log on is being completed?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Why are PCs such a continuous pain in the arse?

Thanks for the reply Richard.

Disabling every startup program including security and rebooting etc. doesn't stop the erratic mouse problem. It comes and goes at random as far as I can see. It's only been for the last couple of months so there is some sort of conflict with something I've installed - but for the life of me I don't know how to track it down (short of uninstalling things one by one).

If you have a 'regular' mouse available, try it and see if the problem persists. If it works, then you will have narrowed your problem down to the wireless mouse and not have to do any more troubleshooting.

Just a thought Martin, but could it be a Driver related problem that is affecting your Mouse?

Have a look at Dwarfs Post #2 here,

http://www.vistax64.com/drivers/271814-mouse-access-has-been-trapped.html ,

for advice given when I recently had a corruption issue with my Logitech Mouse.

Main Tutorial is here,

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-device-manager-install-driver.html , and issue was resolved quickly.

Hope it helps some.

RHL - a sensible suggestion that I should have thought of. I'll have to go into the loft to see if I have an old plug in mouse somewhere.

Sass - I only have an XP disk with the original drivers so checked Logitech's website for a Vista version. Unfortunately my mouse wasn't listed, so I emailed support a few days ago and am still waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed.

Thanks to you both.

Put the specs of your mouse up here, and the approximate date that you got it, and I'm sure that someone else will have similar and be able to provide you with the driver details, far quicker than it takes Logitech to get back to you.

Edit - additional information

To find the Model # [M/N:] of your mouse, remove the battery cover. Inside, see a small label which should show the details - for example "M/N; M-RCD125". Post that information and an effort will be made to find the driver that you should have. These are available for download from the Support section of the Logitech website.

Logitech also have a very handy little auto-detection device available for download, to find your device details automatically here under Option 1;

Support + Downloads

Whatever you do, let us know.

Hello again Sass,

I tried the Logitech autodetect a couple of days ago. Even though I allowed the add-on and it is enabled in IE it does not detect anything. So I used the manual search which could not find the model number in their database.

The model number is M-RAJ89A, called "Cordless Click! Plus Optical Mouse". It's probably about 5 years old.

If a Vista driver is available that would be good, but I wonder if I have resolved the problem as it has worked fine for the past 3 PC sessions.

Hi Martin,

If your mouse is about 5 years old, then it is unlikely that there are going to be any drivers available for it other than the standard generic one built-in to Vista. However, intermittent working quite often points to a hardware problem. It is quite probable that the cause of the problem is a faulty switch on the mouse. I had that with my old one - the left button wouldn't work. Replacing the mouse cured the problem.

I've been away for a few days break, hence the delay.

I think the problem is resolved.

I already have another wireless mouse and was going to try it. This involved removing the existing wireless dongle from the end port of the USB hub sitting out of sight behind the monitor at the back of my crowded desk. I noticed that the dongle was touching the monitor and very slightly "unseated". So I put it into another slot and it's been fine since.

I told my wife not to clean the desk any more as it was obviously her fault and not mine.

Next time I shall remember to check the most likely problem area (me) before blaming the software.

Thanks to all for responding.

Incidentally I'm still waiting for a response from Logitech support.

How do you get the green tick put on resolved issues?

No!!! It's your fault for allowing your poor overworked wife, to clean around the exposed fiddley bits:huh:, of your workspace. Golden rules are to always cleanup after yourself, and don't leave it too long between cleans. I use a very good quality 2" [50mm] paint brush with firm but soft bristles to keep all surfaces.....screen, keyboard, desktop, scanner, printer, modem etc, etc clean and free from dust.

How do you get the green tick put on resolved issues?

I'm pleased to see that you got the mouse problem sorted out though, and that you didn't rush out and waste valuable funds on something that was completely unnecessary.

For future reference, when you want to show a problem subject thread as solved, just click on the solved icon, top right of post Solved icon.JPG. In the small panel that opens, just type in your comments.....Solved etc., and send.
