It wont cost you extra in the package you get from Virgin.

A router is another piece of security, most these days are combined modem and wireless access point, you would connect the router to the phone line through a filter, you probably got those from your ISP, the router acts as the go between the Internet and your computer and it will probably have NAT, which is like a firewall.

You would connect your laptop either with an Ethernet cable to the router or wirelessly.

That's a quick outline of what they are and do if you want more information post back and we'll be able to help you ;)

Yes, a router will allow you to connect your laptop with your desktop. Your ISP still treats it as one connection because the router does the work of separating the traffic.

You should be looking at wireless, unless you like running cables around the house, but make sure your laptop is configured for wireless, otherwise you'll need a PCI card for it. It can be a little intimidating at first to set it up, but you should get the hang of it pretty quickly.

The router should have no affect on you desktop's internet connection.

Usually it is necessary to install the driver for the router on the computer you would like to connect. I would suggest referring to the installation guide that came with the router.

plug in the phone line to ur dsl modem, then from the modem, plug the modem into ur router, then from the router plug it in to your computer, and your laptop should also be able to connect to your router wirelessly. the point of a router is so it can make you modem share the internet with other computers, and have different computers connect together for file sharing.
