KSOD Questions

Hi There,

On 3-14-10 I experienced the allusive Black Screen syndrome that is known to the Vista OS. Though I did recover from it, I felt compelled to research the issue of the KSOD and found this article here >
REVISED: How to fix the Vista KSOD (blacK Screen Of Death) | LogBlog.

Do you know if this is a valid "fix" for future reference! Or could you provide me with further information?

A link would be great!;)

Thank you very much!

If it is not a virus, it may just be an out-dated display driver. That happened to me once, I simply needed to update my driver and the problem was fixed.

Thanks Gil777t & Americano!

I will check out the video! And I will check out my drivers, too! But, I don't think that is the issue. Don't hurt to look though.

I know it's not a virus. I help at other forums, so I do a lot of web searches. I am somewhat literate in the Syware dept. And will be signing up for Malware removal classes as soon as I can find the time to spare.I do run MBAM & SASW and check my HJT logs faithfully. I also have Spywareblaster and WOT installed on my machine. Though I do know that malicious infections evolve everyday and can get past the best of the best security.

Thanks again for your replys!

Since you are adept at security and read HJT logs. I would think you would spot bad values, and exe. The one in the video is fairly new and has been getting by people. It looks like Americano's post is the way to go. Good Luck

Just an update here folks! Did check my display driver. It is up to date.

As I stated above, I can read logs, but I'm not an expert. And won't pretend to be.Though some entries I can spot right away. And I know the important things to look for. I google everything else.

Not sure what to do here. My machine is running good. Though it does freeze on occasion in between logon screen and desktop. But, only shortly. Curiosity does get the best of me.

Thanks again for your input! :D

from my reading, it looks like when you experience the ksod, your computer is booted up, but the screen is just black. the computer accepts input, so you could do like ctrl + shift + esc to start explorer.exe or to end a service. and if u ned to browse a computer (for example to retrieve a file) you can use a webbrowser and type in c:, go to task manager, and then click newtask, and type in firefox.exe or iexplorer.exe and you can search the files from there. the ksod isnt that serious when you think about it as the computer still recieves input from the user.

and i dont think the name black screen of death is appropriate, as it isnt a real error, just a problem with drivers and explorer.exe and such. "your graphics drivers and explorer.exe screwed your computer over error" is a much better name for it (YGDAESYCOE) error.

LOL! You guys are funny! I haven't had any more issues fella's. I went ahead and ran Combofix which did delete the following items:
c:\$recycle.bin\S-1-5-21-1352578450-2577072827-1321790970-500
c:\program files\Common Files\System\Uninstall
c:\program files\Fast Browser Search
c:\program files\Fast Browser Search\IE\FBStoolbar.exe
c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.1.1.inf

And it's actually clean as a whistle. I had it double checked by a friend who is an expert spyware fighter. I also installed MyDefrag and TFC and ran both.

But, you're right about it not being an actual Black screen, looked more like an Illuminated Black screen to me! More so on the grey side!

Katokato; your error code should be trademarked!

Thanks for the info guys! I really appreciate it!

I love my Vista! (repeat "if" needed):sarc:
