To gain knowledge

Just out my want to gain knowledge, i must ask. Now it may be a tough question to answer and i dont expect every detail... What are the basic components on how a computer works? Like what makes it run, what makes it search and be able to retrieve and save data? I want to know how a computer works.

This is such a broad topic, I think your best bet would be to use internet resources such as Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc., to acquire the knowledge you seek.

Here is a short video on RAM, from eHow, on YouTube:

gpu - make graphics
there are 2 kinds, discrete and intergrated, discrete has its own memory (graphics RAM) to use to draw its pictures, intergrated, uses your actual RAM to draw images, and is slower because it doesnt have its own memory to work with, and also takes up RAM so your applications will have less for other kinds of processing.

RAM - temporarily keeps processes and information in memory so processor can work on those processes and use the information, when RAM runs out, cpu pages things in RAM and saves it to hard drive and calls it back from hard drive when it needs to sue it.

BIOS - basic input output system, manages input and output controls

Optical Drives - uses cds and stuffs

webcam - self explanatory

mouse - allows cursor movement

keyboard - allows word input

buttons - buttons

cpu - processes math

psu - converts ac to dc power so computer can use it

operating system- controls everything, tells each component of computer wat to do

hard disk drive - stores data, 2 kinds of ways that you can connect a hard drive, SATA or PATA, SATA is faster, but PATA can connect 2 devices to one cable

sound card - makes sound

mother board - contains things like RAM, and bios chip so your computer can work. also contains cpu and heatsinks and fans. distributes power to all components in computer.

those are the core (main components) except the webcam, keyboard mouse and buttons.
thats preety much it, but this is only VERY VERY VERY VERY BASIC.

Yeah, the best thing I can suggest to do is read. Read a lot. It may sound tedious, but if you really want to learn on your own, it's the best thing to do.

When browsing through Vista Forums I often end up reading entire threads; mainly because I get caught up in the topic. :geek:
