27.2 GB Missing From 72.5 GB Total Hard Drive Space

New Member
Just received a PC with Vista Business 64 bit and a 80 GB hard drive. I've downloaded Opera and surfed the internet. I've noticed that the total free memory is being reported as 45.3 GB. I've done some research and found this forum. I've checked vssadmin list shadows and it's reported as:
used shadow copy storage space: 3.576 GB
allocated shadow copy storage space: 3.82 GB
maximum shadow copy storage space: 10.882 GB

Where did the entire 27.2 GB go?

I just used the WinDirStat application on C: and it revealed that the Windows folder is at 20.6 GB.
The largest folders within the Windows folder are as follows:
winsxs 11.0GB
SoftwareDistribution 5.4GB
assembly 1GB
system32 931 MB
SysWOW64 927 MB

There is a folder called <Files> on C: that contains a pagefile.sys that's 2.3 GB in size.

Yep, afraid so. Disk space is cheap these days so Microsoft isn't going to spend a helluva lot of time trying to shrink Windows.

You have a completely normal system and with 45GB to go there should be no problem unless you create a lot of disk space hogs like videos. Those you should park on an external disk or large (16 or 32GB) USB stick. Btw: winsxs is not really a folder. It is a directory of many folders and that will grow. Mine is 15GB right now.
