Odd 'shield' icon behaviour.

OK, today I checked for an Apple update using the updater. I have it as a shortcut icon on my desktop. I also use SpywareBlaster & have that as a desktop icon as well. Both of these icons until today had a little coloured shield in front (& slightly to the right) of them (coloured red, green, blue & yellow). The same as the Security Centre shield. For some reason the shields have disappeared from in front of the Apple updater & SpywareBlaster. Everything seems to be working normally.

I had turned the UAC off earlier today to customise the toolbar on K-Meleon but that was turned back on after about five minutes or so. I am Admin on this computer & the only user.

Can anyone explain this please?

If the shield was a security shield, just run an antivirus and malware scan. If all is normal, it is nothing to worry about. You can check the settings, and make sure that permissions are the way you want. Go to the program, right click, properties and security.

OK thanks. I have right-clicked on SpywareBlaster's icon & checked 'run as admin' in 'advanced' & the shield has returned.

I find that I can't do this with the Apple updater though. I cannot tick the check box.

Do you think that it has something to do with me turning the UAC on & off to alter 'Tools Config' in K-Meleon?

The most difficult part of helping online, is that it is hands off. But based upon what you told me, if you scanned with your antivirus and downloaded and used malwarebytes, the change is due to the UAC change; in my opinion. It is too much of a conincidence, otherwise.

I use this myself, it is excellent. Download and run a scan.

OK thanks. I used to run MBAM but it had a few too many false-positives for my liking. I have run my AV & I will now run a full SUPERAntiSpyware scan. I think it is probably me fiddling about with K-Meleon that has created this change. I have always had to run SpywareBlaster as admin anyway. The Apple updater never did run as admin, I don't know why it has the shield next to it. I have it set to 'Never' auto-update check, so I occasionally check it.

I have only one false positive, be sure that they are false.

If anything turns up I will check out the SAS forums to be sure. 28 mins into the scan there's not a sausage!

Apart from the shield not being in front of the Apple updater all my other security settings seem fine.

So...all being well, I shall be  & not  soon.

Well, according to my AV suite, Windows Defender & SUPERAntiSpyware I'm clean. I don't know if this is relevant but as I was customising K-Meleon's Klassic skin I noticed that a generic K-Meleon favicon (KM's a bit weird with favicons) on the toolbar, which I have had for six months, has suddenly turned into a red square with a 'C' in the middle. This is for Chambers | Free English Dictionary (Chambers dictionary). KM will display Wikipedia's favicon but not You Tube's. It's a bit weird like that.

Anyway, if I remember correctly, when I first downloaded SpywareBlaster it didn't have that shield at first. Once I ran it though, the shield appeared.

If I didn't laugh...

:roflmao:

..I'd cry...

Thanks anyway richc46, buy yourself a pint!

I think that I am like you, very careful with the big investment that I made with my computer. If I made the scans that you made and came up clean, I would feel secure. Just go enjoy your computer.
