It has Vista ultimate on it.
We have tryed "reseating" the drive a couple of times and the tests still say no hard drive detected.
error code 0141
Msg error code 2000-0141
He has not made any backups of his data, also he has not made any backup recovery discs
OK the data maybe lost, but what about windows, how does that get put back on a new hard drive if your laptop had the OS preinstalled.
Or is the best option is to take it to a computer repair shop and maybe they can transfer all the data and the OS to a new hard drive....
I just like to know how this works, its not for me , this happened to my mate next door.

Hard drive looks if it has failed
The OS was preinstalled
No backups of any type

I have done a couple of searches and this does not mean to say it is the actuall hard drive thats failed, as some people have bought new hard drives and are still getting the same message.
Could this also mean a motherboard or controller problem.....
