Vista super slow loadup, sluggish performance

I'm working on a friend's laptop and I'm clueless on how to fix this. On the black Windows loading screen the green bar stops and starts moving again randomly and the laptop takes about 20 minutes to boot to the Vista login screen. Once it gets there it takes another 10 minutes before the taskbar displays. THEN once you get there the computer takes forever to process anything you click on (10 minutes at least to do anything)

I tried booting in Safe Mode and it stalls for a bit trying to load the crcdisk.sys file. I've tried running the Windows Memory checker program thingy (the name escapes me right now, it loads before Vista does and is a blue screen) and it didn't catch any problems.

The specs are as follows:
MSi CR600 Series Laptop
Vista Home Premium SP1, 32bit
Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 2.00GHz (Not great but the computer shouldn't be this slow)
nVidia Geforce 8200m
3GB ram
320GB HDD

Also the BIOS doesn't have an option to boot from a USB device or otherwise I would load Puppy, start pulling files to save and do a clean install of Vista once I found an installation disk. Any ideas on how to fix this Vista issue?

can you run msconfig and select boot logging and apply, then search for ntblog.txt and delete if found. reboot and the paste contents of the new ntblog.txt, that,ll help to see whats stalling.

you have tried system restore and malware scanning first ?

Okay, I'm no expert so I'll go through the basic things I did to speed up one of my laptops when it started acting up.

You've got a dual core right?

Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> System Configuration -> Select 'Boot' tab -> Select 'Advanced Options' and check the number of processors is set to 2 and the maximum memory is set to highest (just in case it's dropped right down.)

If that's all in check, have you got AVG installed? If so, disable it and try booting up again and see if it's any quicker.

Like I say, I'm no expert, but the above solution worked on a very similar sounding problem.

Right now everything on the computer is locked up and "Not Responding", once I actually make it to the command prompt/search box I'll get on this. Then I've gotta wait for the computer to restart then hope it lets me jump online... while I'm waiting/hoping for this to work, any other suggestions?

make a bootable cd/dvd/usb erd comander o/s from this
Free Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Tools Download
its only a demo version but should do the trick, you will need a vista install disk as well.
erd commander with give you access to system repair tools, file managers etc. on some clients pcs just booting with the disk will bring them back to life.

I made a Startup Repair Disk and it couldn't fix the issue. It tried a System Restore and it didn't work either. A screen came up saying "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically" and prompts me to send Microsoft information. I clicked the detail problems and this came up:

Code:

This doesn't mean anything to me but maybe one of you can interpret this? I'm gonna try to get a boot log up here sometime soon

EDIT: After I ran the System Repair, I tried to boot Vista again. After the black Windows loading screen did it's thing forever, a black screen displaying something like "1244/1244 Registry..." appeared for a short bit. I wasn't able to read exactly what it said but I do know the beginning of it started with 1244/1244 Registry

A boot log isn't gonna happen, I can't open msconfig. The computer freezes after you start clicking things, I can't type into the search box without it freezing and I can't manually find it without something "not responding".

I think I'm just gonna make a LiveCD, save the various pictures and document onto USB, and perform a clean install of Vista once I track down a Vista disk.

My Computer

Okay.

Go to command prompt: sfc /scannow

also try to run chkdsk

disable anti virus

do that all in safe mode

go into safemode, hopefully u will be able to go into msconfig and all those kinds of progs.

follow the tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html?filter[11]=Performance Maintenance

also try to update windows to sp2, i think this is a driver problem.

and, how fast does your hard drive spin?

Alright, the scannow failed and showed this message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." and I had a free command line afterwards. I ran the chkdsk and everything checked fine... except the very end. "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."

I did all of this through the Command Prompt you get when you run the System Recovery Options from the System Recovery Disk I made earlier

EDIT: I managed to get the laptop to start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I reran the scannow command and it's been hung at 29% in the Verification Process for sometime now. The cursor is still blinking at the end of the line so I don't think the computer is froze..

I had to take a break yesterday, spent almost 9 hours trying to work on the computer. I can't get the laptop to make a log of the bootup (It can never find ntblog.txt)

I just ran chkdsk and this came up:

Code:
The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F <fix> option to correct these.

I'm going to run the fix option here in a bit and I'm going to retry the sfc/scannow command too

My Computer

Okay, run the fix option, tell me what happens next.
