Hi,

What is wrong with inserting the Ubuntu Live CD into your Laptop and booting that. You may have to change your BIOS settings or go into the one time boot menu.

The DVD rom of my laptop is not functioning so I was unable to run the Ubuntu Live CD

Is it possible to run the Ubuntu Live CD ISO using my Desktop: Windows XP through Local Area Network to retrieve files from my Laptop: Vista Ultimate?

All efforts to fix the laptop even using all steps that I've collected during the past 2 days were unsuccessful.

Welcome

If efforts to revcover your data, using live CD, fail. There is always the possiblity of installing your hard drive on another computer to recover your data. Yes, it is a pain, but depending on the value of your data, it may be a good final resort.

Hi,

If you REALLY do not want to remove the hard disk, try visiting http://etherboot.org. This has the tools you need. Here is the page you really need: sanboot - Etherboot/gPXE Wiki

Else, and this is probably easier, boot from USB. If you want help with this, just ask.

Ah! Before ending this topic, can anyone recommend any similar boot disk / rescue disk just like Ubuntu Live CD?

I saw a lot over the net but lacks proper documentation, OR I don't know how to use them properly.

Ex. Acronis, they provide a lot of solutions but I don't know how to use their products..

Hi,
I was planning to use this tutorial before posting here,

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

BUT, what if the DVDrom fails? Is it possible to use the Ubuntu Live CD over LAN?

Solution:
Idea #3598: "LAN installation" - Ubuntu brainstorm

They say, it's already implemented but don't have proper documentation? hmm and i couldn't understand the next remaining posts ^^

@richc46
I can't afford to dismantle my laptop
I might damage more parts in the process..

@nemiro
uhm do you have any simpler approach? i mean, it might take me some time to learn this pxe stuff, i have seen similar though NetBootDisk.com - The Universal TCP/IP Network Bootdisk for M$ Networks

@Katokato
boot Ubuntu via USB? ~ if so, then i'll try to find a documentation for that..tnx

I'm trying to search some tutorials in youtube as of this time ^^
Found:
Selkie Rescue Data Recovery [Not Free]
YouTube - Selkie Rescue Data Recovery

Active @ Bootdisk [Bought] ~ still downloading..
YouTube - Windows LiveCD & toolset. Bootable CD, DVD or USB disk for system recovery.

Haven't tried anything yet, waiting for further advice :p

Selkie Rescue Data Recovery
Easy to use with just a few clicks..

Active @ Bootdisk
It has Network tools and File Explorer!

=_= sorry for such a long and confusing post

Hey, you say you have no $$ for hardware but if you can spring for software, you might want to try Selkie since this is what some other users say: Selkie Rescue user reviews and ratings - CNET Download.com

They've got a free demo version that you can try and it'll show if you can recover your files or not. If you find it works then get the full version to recover your files. I've used this program a couple of times now and it works just they say it will. Well worth the few dollars it costs.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

My Computer

I'm hoping that someone can help me with this too. A friend used my computer and visited fubar, the next day when I restarted my computer it was in safe mode. I've been trying to restore, have tried hitting F8 when restarting, rebooting, everything. I have been stuck in safe mode for four days. The computer came with Vista already installed so I do not have a windows disk to reinstall. My restores aren't working either. I'm afraid that the only option I have is to re-install the gateway operating disk and start over, though I may loose all of my programs. If anyone knows of another option I'd greatly appreciate it! I've planned on upgrading to windows 7 but I'd like to try something else first. Thanks in advance!
