Windows Vista Restarts when it is suppose to Shut Down/Sleep

I've read about this problem in several other post but no solutions that have worked for me.

My problem is that whenever I close my lid, allow my computer to go to sleep/hibernate, or even go to start->shut down, my computer restarts.

This past weekend I had my computer reformatted, thinking this would solve the problem, but the problem still persists.

The only way I can make my computer turn off is to hold down the power button for several seconds.

I have minimum computer knowledge, but I have been trying step by step solutions listed on other forums.
I've been through all of the power management steps and have all of my settings on the suggested settings for this problem.
I've deactivated almost all applications from opening on start up.
I've checked USB, LAN settings and I believe those are not the problem.
Still kind of unfamiliar with BIOS

When running the command powercfg -a, this is what comes up
C:\Windows\system32>powercfg -a
The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby ( S3 ) Hibernat
e Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

This is all of the information I can think of to include that may be helpful.

I am just wondering if anyone knows of a different solution that may work.

Thanks for the info. I've actually been to that link several times and have worked through all of the steps to the best of my ability and still no luck.

I should of mentioned that I have a laptop and use wireless connections.

Still no luck and I read through other post from the link you sent me and I have tried most of the other suggestions but tried a couple new ones and nothing worked

I had my computer completely wiped on April 4 because of this problem, and the problem was still on my computer after reformatting it so I should of tried the system restore before I had that done.

Has this been a Vista problem? I've been thinking about buying Windows 7 if it is compatible with my computer. Do you think that would end this problem?

Many members, including myself have had this problem, but the majority of cases it was caused by the nic card (network waking the computer). Solving that problem, the sleep problem has not been that prevalant. To be honest, I do not think that Windows 7 will solve this for you ( I have 7 and it is awesome) but you can go for 7 anyway.

Let me sleep on this, if I come up with anything I will post. I will check out forum threads with similar problems and see what I come up with.

Don't give up, we did not lose yet.

Night.

Hi mosborne,

As Richard mentioned, mouse and keyboard are possible causes of conflict.

If you have either a wireless mouse or keyboard, try using a wired one instead and see if it has any effect.

Sorry it took me so long.
I tried what you suggested and the problem is still occurring.
I mentioned my problem to a friend the other day and she said she had a very similar problem which was caused by her outdated motherboard and I believe she said updating it solved her problem. Now this is something I am unfamiliar with but just thought I would mention.

I have no clue what is causing this because I feel like I have tried every possible solution.

If you want to try the Motherboard route, here is a beginners guide. I would suggest, that you have someone with expertise help you. You basically have a small problem and do not want to make it worse.

You can go to the device manager and update your drivers and cards. That may solve the prolbem
