So,
I have a SimpleTech 350 gb external hard drive that I store essentially every music, movie and picture file on. I tried to share it across a home network. It immediately said I did not have permission to access the drive.
After about two weeks of trying everything (restarting, restoring, attempting to open in safe mode, etc.) I finally got access to the drive, only to find that all the folder permissions had been changed. I took ownership of the drive (checking that subcontainers and files received the same.) Then I changed all the permissions to give the owner full control. When I went to open a music file, it would either tell me I didn't have access, or it would give me the usual Vista security prompt.
I manually went through each file (oh man that was a day) and checked full control on the owner permissions. The entire hierarchy of files and folders states the owner has full control.
Most will open as a single file now. But I still get access denied on external programs like itunes when I try to sync an ipod.
I have been forum scavenging since this happened, and I'm come across a few people who seemed to have similar problems with sharing drives and some weird permissions being locked on them. But no one has solutions.
Please help. I have tried everything I can think of. I'm about to throw the damn thing out.
