Vista startup failure

I am having trouble with my OS. I was using my computer when suddenly the screen went black. I tried to reboot, but I received weird green lines on my screen. I am able to participate in this forum by rebooting in safe mode. I thought it may be hardware issues, but if that were the case, safe mode probably wouldn't work. Anyone want to help me tackle this?
