Hi

yesterday my vista 64, Packard Bell ipower X9810, was switched off at the wall whilst it was running....

Now it doesnt do anything, no bleeps, no lights on the mouse and keyboard, the fans are running and there are lights on inside the case, but it wont boot up, the monitors are working although they just go onto standby after a while. Ive been told i could have damaged my power supply and or motherboard, what size would the power supply be, which should i replace first

many thanks Karl

Hello karlc, welcome to Vista Forums!

First see if there's a switch on the back of the PC that's part of the power supply, if there is switch it off and back on to see it resets the PC in some way.

As you seem to have access to another PC have a look at the tutorial at the link below to see if it'll boot to safe mode to do a repair.

I don't believe that losing power would damage the PSU or motherboard.

Do you feel comfortable enough to open the case, there's a battery attached to the motherboard and removing it for a minute or so resets the BIOS to default, now I don't know if that will do it or not but if you feel up to it can't hurt.

Be advised: static electricity can damage the motherboard, the way around that is to keep your forearm against the PC case the whole time you touch the battery.

How: remove the mains power and press the power button several times to bleed off any residual electricity left in the mobo, then open the case and find the battery, remove it for 10 minutes then put it back, put the PC back together then power it up to see if it starts.

When you try to turn it on, do you see the POST screen (the screen with the hp logo on it and it would usually be blue)? If not, then it is something with hardware <---My hunch.

Hi folks

Nothing comes up on the screens (I have 2), only the samsung logo. I think its hardware now, a computer pro recommended the power supply, the sudden loss of power can damage certain parts of the supply, the motherboard being the fussiest component, while others will function

Ill replace it tomorrow, and keep ya posted
Karl
