Hello, I dont think my vista finds my DVD drive. When i try to update drive it says that only the cd-rom is up to date.

Is this what its supposed to look like in this pic?

Try and download the driver directly from the company website that makes the hardware. If you can find the model number.

Hello GeorGeZ,
That is normal for it to just say CD Rom.
If the drive is working OK, then there is no need to update the drivers.
Most manufacturers rely on Windows drivers now anyway.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Well, I have entered my "Service Tag" Into dells system and shown me that there is a new driver update, i also tried microsoft fix it program but it would not fix it for me. The thing is that it only reads CD and not dvds.... A driver is about 50 pounds from dell.... so thats why i decided to post here before i buy it because it might be because of vista.

I downloaded the update, should i install it?

If you are sure this is the correct update for your system, then make a restore point and install the new driver.

If for some reason you are not happy with the new driver, then you have a restore point to go back to.

Okay, I just bought a new dvd drive last night , ( LG GH22LS50 22x DVDRW SATA DL & RAM + LightScribe Black - Retail Box With Software - Ebuyer) i found out that the laser has failed when i went into BOOT MENU and diagnostics and tested my dvd drive with my vista reinstallation dvd.

When i get it and install it, i remove the old one can i just insert the new one or do i have to boot my system again and then remove everything and add the new one?

After i install the new one, do i have to go into system setup ? Or will it find it automatically and it will just run. Thanks

You should be able to fit it, connect the data and power leads, and be good to go. Vista will install the drivers automatically.

If drivers came with the new DVD/CD player on a disk, they will probably be out of date, go to the makers site to check for newer ones.
