SOLVED - Password prompt not working when laptop 'wakes'

Hi Guys,

Am new to this forum *waves*, so please bear with me while I figure out how to use it!

I am having a problem that started about 1 week ago with my password protection. I have absolutely no idea what I have done to cause the problem and have tried Googleing, but cannot find a solution.

When I lift my lid on my laptop (whether it is plugged in or not) I have settings coordinated in a way so that I am prompted for my password for security reasons (obviously). I have the lid settings, set to 'sleep' (and have also tried 'hibernate' as well).

All of a sudden the only time I am prompted to enter my password is on Startup. Checked all settings; tried hibernate (plugged in and unplugged) same as sleep and nothing worked. Tried changing my password and also turning it off and on and still it is not working! I am the only one who uses my computer, therefore I am the Administrator. The concern is, anyone in the workplace can open my laptop lid and have full access to my laptop, as well as the sticky beaks at home.

Can anyone please offer a solution, step by step. I am not familiar with drivers etc nor do I know how to figure out what versions of particular programs I am running, but if given steps can easily figure it out.

Thank you in advance! :)

Hello Cleo, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might double check in your Power Plan Options to make sure that you have the Require password on wakeup option set to Yes.

As for how how to use the forum the FAQs link may help with the basics. If you have any questions though, then please just let us know. :)

Hope this helps,

Thank you, Brink.

After going into Power Options and clicking 'Choose what closing the lid does', the option for 'Password protection on wakeup' options are greyed out so I cannot select them. At the top of the screen under the 'Define power buttons and turn on password protection' heading is link 'Change settings that are currently unavailable'. After clicking that link and pressing 'Continue' the options that were greyed out are now active, however I am unable to save the changes and password protection is not activated.

I then go into 'Power Options', 'Select a power plan'. I have selected out of 'Balanced', 'VAIO Ultimate Battery' (I am using a Song Vaio VGN-CR35G Laptop) and 'High Performance' the middle plan which has the best battery life. I click on the link located directly below this option, 'Change plan settings'.

I am now in another window titled 'Change settings for the plan: VAIO Ultimate Battery'. I then click the link 'Change advanced power settings', which opens a new smaller box 'Power Options'. The same link appears at the top of this box, as did in the 'Define power buttons and turn on password protection'. After clicking the link and again pressing 'Continue', the 'Additional settings' menu expands and another option is available, 'Require a password on wakeup'. Now for some reason both options were set to 'No'. I changed both to yes and clicked 'Apply' then 'Ok'.

After doing this I checked that it worked by closing the lid and it did! Only problem now is, in the very first Window the options are still greyed out and the link, 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' is still there. This have never been there, nor have the options ever been greyed out. Will this pose a problem and cause the password prompt to turn off again? I am assuming an update has occurred and settings have been changed etc.. as was happening with my sound, although managed to fix that!

Cheers,
Cleo

Cleo,

The Change settings that are currently unavailable link in the Power Options (from Change advanced power settings link) is normal. It's purpose is to elevate (run as administrator) the Power Options window to allow access to those options that are grayed out by default. Notice the UAC shield in front of that link. Anytime you see that sheild next to a link or on a icon, it means that it will require UAC approval by you before it will be allowed to run or open.
