Solved Non working Desktop Shortcuts

I have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

Your links are broken - for whatever reason (maybe the files were moved to another location or partition). You have to recreate the shortcuts which should be fairly easy. Those shortcuts are useless. All you have left are the pictures.
Paint you find in %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe

Thanks for your interest people. It still hasn't worked.

It doesn't even give me the option to tick the checkbox for 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

By using the 'Other Options' choice of programs I can select paint but when I do I get the following message in a window:-

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Paint cannot read this file
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.

If you have any more ideas I would be delighted to try them, and again, many thanks for your interest.

Hi Red,

Did you apply the lnkfix file to the registry? No problems?

Could you do the following:

Right-click on one of your non-working shortcuts and select the Shortcut tab.

With the Properties window showing, run the Snipping Tool (C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe), select the Shortcut window with your cursor, Click on File, save the file and upload it.

Ed,

Tried Inkfix but no difference.

I have tried what you have now posted and when I tried to save it I got the following message:
'Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.'

I used it on Notepad.

Many thanks. It's good to know there's help out there.

RedNolan.

I'm not sure what you did, Red, but something's wrong. Let's try this again:

Right-click on one of your non-working shortcuts and select the Shortcut tab.

With the Properties window showing on your desktop, run the Snipping Tool (C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe). It's window should show up at the left top of your screen with the message "Drag the cursor around the area you want to capture", and your screen will look a little grayed-out (If not, click on New in the menu bar). The cursor should look like a large plus sign.

Move the cursor to the top left of the Shortcut Properties window, left-click, and drag it to the bottom right corner. Release the mouse button. A new window will appear with the Properties window inside it outlined in red. Click on the diskette icon at top left of that window, select the directory you want to save the file in (It's a JPG file), give it a name, and click Save.

Then upload the file with your reply.

Dear Ed,

My better half had someone look at this machine and he ran MalwareBytes. It found 6 infected files. They were removed and it all works again. Apparently it had to do with my profile. Many thanks for the efforts of yourself and others. Much appreciated.
