Black screen issue

Hi,
Thanks for such an informative and resourceful site. I've read all (well most) of the posts in this thread, but nothing seems to address my exact issue of having a black screen, which means that I'm not able to access the BIOS. I can hear my laptop fan running, and every 20 seconds or so the computer powers off then reboots immediately, but nothing on the screen. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Thank you Blink, for moving my post to the appropriate forum, and my apologies for not giving more detail about my issue.

More Info:

I put my HP DV9000 laptop in sleep mode for about 1 hour, but when I returned, I could not get anything to appear on the screen (black screen). I tried using the touch pad, pressing any key, and even shutting down. After a hard shutdown, it powers up, but reboots every 20 seconds or so, and still no screen. I've removed the battery and replaced it, and removed the battery and used just the power cord, still nothing. I've read some of the post regarding this issue, but I'm the only one who seems to have the black screen even after a hard shutdown, which means I can't get to my BIOS. Help!

{solved} Re: Black screen issue

Well folks, I found out that my problem was attributed to by a defective Nvidia graphics chip. It affected HP, Toshiba, Dell, and maybe a few others.

I purchased my laptop in May 2007, and it completely failed on me in April 2010 (after experiencing intermittent issues). I made several attempts to get this rectified through HP's customer services, but was met with dead ends (they wanted me to pay $259 to fix a defect that they knew about, but failed to notify me of). I finally got it resolved when I put together a small claims package (see www.hplies.com for help) and had HP served.

Ms. Rude from HP's Exec. Cust Relations department contacted me by phone and offered me a settlement. I did not accept her original offer, but we agreed to a larger settlement due to my lost productivity, court costs, etc. So now I'm just waiting for my label and box to send the laptop back to HP, then I'll get my check, afterwhich, I will dismiss the case against them.

If you're experiencing any overheating, fan continuously running, blue screen, black screen, lines through your screen, you machine powering off/on by itself, you might want to check out www.hplies.com (even if you machine isn't an HP computer, but has the Nvidia video chip). And don't be discouraged if your machine is 3 years old.

Hello Yazzy,

No problem. There are a lot of people out there who've paid HP to fix the issue. They never should have had to pay because HP knew about the defect and Nvidia paid HP and others to either fix or replace those models affected. If you google "Nvidia", you'll see there's plenty of documentation regarding their loss from the payout.

And here's some important notes for anyone attempting or planning to try and get their issue(s) resolved:
  • make several attempts to get it solved by calling HP
  • document EVERYTHING! Included name of person you spoke with, time of day, date, what was said, etc.
  • email Mr. Mark Hurd, CEO and President (see www.hplies.com)
  • and don't fall for their bull. They'll deny that there was a defect, and they'll try to discourage you by saying you're out of warranty. SO WHAT!!! Stick to your guns!
  • And finally, take them to small claims court! (see www.hplies.com). That is the only way that your issue will be resolved.

I had a similar problem... But I just ended up replacing my graphics card.
