Hello Kelvin,

I suppose it depends on what new graphics card you are wanting to get to use with it. Some of the latest models (ex: GTX 480) can use around 295 watts themselves under full load.

hmm. i had a little trouble on newegg finding a gpu. im looking to not waste more than 130 dollars on a graphics card (dedicated of course!).

im looking to run combat arms at 30-50 fps on 1280x1024 rez medium-max settings,

guild wars at medium-high setting 1280x1024 rez at 35-55 fps,

call of duty (all versions except after mw2) 1280x768-1024 rez, at medium - low settings at 35-45 fps,

microsoft flgiht simulator X at 35-50 fps medium - high settings at 1280x1024 rez at 35-40 fps.

halo (all versions) same as cod.

upcoming guildwars2 videogame same settings as guildwars.

do you think anything can do that for under 130 bux? i think the psu should be fine as it has 2 12v rails at 22amps, so the amperage can be evenly distributed <<<< is that correct?

500 w should do it corect, even 650w is a bit of overkill i read somewhere....?

oh and also pcie 2.0 is backwards compatible with pcie 1.0 correct?

heres a forum chat i had with another person: http://www.vistax64.com/graphic-cards/269495-help-upgrading-graphics-card.html i never got around to upgrading it because i have been a bit busy and money was low, but now that i have moar munayz i have decided to do it, i just need confirmation because i am very hesitant when it comes to spending money.

I'm afraid that I'm no help on recommending a graphics card. Especially for frame rates since I'm not a gamer.

Yes, PCIE 2.0 & 1.0 are compatible, but 2.0 in a 2.0 slot would be best for performance.

i do buy a lot from newegg.ca and what i do fisrt is read the review .
that will gave a really good ideal if it good or not .
i do read review on every thing i buy before i deceide to buy ..
even at tiger direct they have a lot review to check on .
just my 2 cents

because 68 % out of 68 reviews from custommers it a let low to me .
it shoult be at 78 % then that be good

Whenever buying a graphics card like on Newegg, check at the top and click on specs. it will give you the minimum PSU watts. But keep in mind that it's not really so much the wattage as the volts on the 12v rail(s). The ATI 5770 series card shows a minimum of 450w. So the Antec should be OK, since i saw in your specs you prefer ATI. Also I noticed it's an OEM machine, sometimes they have their own proprietary power supplies made just to fit into their cases. You might want to make sure that the standard PSU will fit. Fabe

Ok so what you guys are saying is that i should buy it considering that it has good reviews (psu) and it gives enough power for many of the thing that i want to upgrade+ a lil headroom.

thanks for the support i just clicked the add to cart button!

if the form factors are same of the case+psu+mobo then it is fine

Hi there, I'm also looking to upgrade the power supply on my Pavilion a6110n and the advice in this thread has been really helpful. I just had one more question: do I need to worry about finding a power supply that will fit my case, or will any of the well-reviewed power supplies that have a higher wattage than the card I want to buy generally work?

My Computer

Hi Turnpikelad and welcome to Vista Forums

Here is the main HP webpage for your system: HP Pavilion a6110n Desktop PC - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)

From what I have seen with a brief look, the system uses a standard ATX format PSU. You should be OK to replace it with a higher power model. Be aware that the higher power versions, typically 850W and above, might be significantly longer than a standard unit and may not fit in your case.

Hey, thanks so much. So slight variations in the dimensions (5.9 vs 6.0 vs 6.3 inches width, for example) aren't going to misalign my screw holes or screw things up in some other way? Should I try to match the ATX generation (I think I've got a 1.3? not sure though), or is an ATX 2.0 psu going to work just fine?

Also, I just discovered that the video card (Geforce 8600GT) I've been running on for a couple years isn't actually rated to work with a 250W PSU - it's supposed to have at least 350 watts. (In particular, it's supposed to have access to 18A on the +12V rail, but I've only got 14A on that rail in my psu.) I've been getting limited stuttering during high load parts of my games... perhaps that's related, perhaps not. But have I been hurting my system in other ways -- or am I in danger of doing so? Except for the stuttering, everything seems to be working fine. I've got two hard drives, my video card, the processor and a couple USB devices hooked up though, which seems like a lot for a 250W supply. Am I killing something?

My Computer

ATX PSUs are manufactured to standard dimensions, and the position of the mounting screws is the same across the board. As I stated above, the length can vary, and with the higher rating units this can be considerably greater than the lower rated models.

A 250W PSU is probably adequate for many pre-built systems with their standard configuration (although some do include a higher rated unit as standard). However, if you are considering changing the configuration, e.g. by adding a graphics card to give improved graphics capability over the on-board solution, then I would consider a PSU upgrade.

I would consider a unit of 500W minimum. This would give you some upgrade capacity for further expansion. Of course, you can choose to use a higher-rated unit instead, but take note of the possible increase in length with the higher rated (850W+) units.
