Hi

Running Vista 32 bit, have the normal start up repair loop going on details below

OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1

It won't start in safe mode & system restore (6 points) has not enough free space to restore the disk (I was backing up files into a folder to copy to an external drive filling the drive when it crashed - doh) & it says the Recovery X the disk is not in the selected restore point

Is there a way of copying files to enable the system resore to work or some other things to try.

Thanks very much in advance for any help

Hi Ed,

I don't think the sysinfo tool will be any use as the PC won't start up. I have one hard drive 250gb unchanged partition wise from new. I upgraded the ram from 1gb to 3gb with no issues & have tried starting with the old ram in & out + the new ram in and out but no change.

I'm not sure what caused the problem but the start up repair did run a week or 2 ago & that's why I was creating a back up folder to copy to another drive when it crashed again. The PC would if left on overnight shut down & restart but no other problems over the last few Months
I'm hoping that a system restore will enable me to copy all the info & then get the PC formatted & a fresh Vista install or whatever it takes to sort out. To do so it looks like some space will need to be created somehow before this can happen.

Spec below of the PC (3 years old now)
Dell E520
Intel® Core 2 Duo E4300 Processor (1.80GHz,800MHz,2MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic - English
1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x512] - **Now 3gb**
250GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst cache
Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3000
16X DVD+/-RW Drive

I'm still not clear what you mean by "system restore". If it won't boot into safe mode, is system restore an option on your boot menu? Is this Dell's system recovery tool? When you select it, what options do you have?

BTW, what machine are you using to post?

Ed

Thanks theog, a mate is helping & I have passed the link onto him.

Ed, I meant use a restore point when I mentioned system restore.

I am using a combo of my works PC & my Wifes laptop to post.
The desktop in question is stuck on startup repair

I assume you're in System Recovery Options on the Vista install disk, then?

If that's the case, you should be able to go into Command Prompt, which should allow you to copy and/or delete files, etc., and free space for the System Restore.

Let us know if this is the case, and you want to spend more time on it.

Ed
