External Hard Drive doesn't show up in "my computer" but does in "device manager"

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select Properties.
Report back with your findings.

where all the other ones have click-able boxes on the lower half of disk management: "disk 0" is there and reads"Basic", "230 GB", and "online" and is not click-able. It's just a silhouette (as is the CD-ROM drive)

Are you saying this drive shows up on other machines but not yours ? ?

here's the screen shot... so clearly the computer see's the hard drive and recognizes it, but simply won't show it in my computer

ha, so that got it to work with the computer... but now it's not working for the xbox! What would i do to restore it to original format to work on the xbox?

My Computer

LOL,

That's tricky - is your xbox expecting a FAT formatted drive?

I don't have an xbox - but I expect it should be fine with a regular 0x07 partitions.

Just do the same in reverse - rt click it Modify>Change partition id , select OC , Yes, Apply.

Yeah! It works on the computer, but now when i go to plug it in to the Xbox to play video show's i have on there... it doesn't work on the xbox.

What partition ID might it need to be in order to work on the Xbox 360?

My Computer

I know this thread is old but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to SIW2... I downloaded the minitool partition wizard and it worked perfectly!

You're welcome - happy it worked for you:D

If anyone else is still using Vista these days, get the same issue and land on this page (just like I did yesterday), I'd like to share the solution I found. (I don't like to install things I don't know anything about).
This is related to another old topic here ;"Vista "forgets" USB Device Locations" and displays the error <%3 NULL:OpText>

It's actually very simple, just uninstall the pilot (in the Properties of the USB device in the window that pops up when you're about the disconnect the USB).
turn you pc off, unplug the usb. Then reboot and when it's all ready, plug the USB device and let it find and install the pilot again.
woohoo it works!

That's it - this is the post I would have been grateful to read one day ago :)
