Installing Vista help please. major complications

I'm trying to reinstall Vista Home Premium on my pc. I have run into a few problems though. When I try to install vista I get the Error Code 0x800706f8. Which from what I understand is a problem with my Dvd drives firmware. So I tried to do a flat install but my Windows explorer is not working and is preventing me from moving the files from the disc to my hard drive. I have tried updating windows to fix explorer but i receive more errors when trying to update. help please D:!

Do you have the option to reinstall from the recovery partition (D). If you have this partition, that would be the easiest. Post the make of your PC. Chances are I have the required procedure.

Well I tried to boot from a USB drive but I got the same error code as when I tried from the DVD. Which makes no sense because that error is associated with the dvd drives firmware being outdated. I'm at a complete loss...

I can't update the drivers because I can't even get windows to boot. I have been useing Linux ubuntu.

Ok I have done that and it it went well, thank you. Now my bootmgr is missing, and i tried to fix it but my DVD drives or are not listed in diskpart and this command does not work.
:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force
It states "this device is not ready" when i type the letter of my Dvd driver
Where do I go from here? thank you for all the help so far.

edit: Im trying to install from the flash drive now.
edit edit: same error code as before.

Hi assuck,

I'm a little confused:

1. At what point in the Vista installation do you get the error code?

2. "Ok I have done that and it it went well, thank you. Now my bootmgr is missing, and i tried to fix it but my DVD drives or are not listed in diskpart and this command does not work.

How were able to get to the "Shift F-10" procedure if you were unable to boot from DVD or USB? Or were you still able to boot from your installed Vist at that point? And now you've formatted the drive?

3. I know it's a dumb question, but are you sure that, when you were trying to boot from the USB, it wasn't still trying to boot from the DVD? Had you reset the BIOS to boot from the USB drive and removed the Vista install disk?

Ed

Hello Ed,
I would get the error code about 20% through the "expanding files" during the windows installation. I got that error code around the same time every time during the installations. I have tried from a Vista SP1 install disk and a Vista SP2 disk, as well as made two different bootable versions of windows from a Flash drive. Yes i know it booted from the USB drive because I changed my Bios boot order to boot from the USB first. Before it loads the USB files it says "booting from USB" and I made sure I had no DVD in the drive, so yea i know I was botting from the USB.
As far as using shift F10 I never did. I used a recovery CD to get to the CMD. Even though my HD is formatted which I was planning to do anyways at some point, I can still use the recovery CD obviously.

I ran startup repair like 5 times, I can run it again, and I will begin the other steps. Thank you Theog.

Edit: running HDD diagnostic and memory.

Hi Assuck,

I'm with you; don't know why you would get a DVD error installing from USB.

Only thing I can suggest is to unplug the DVD drive so that, virtually, it doesn't exist, and try from USB again.

Ed

Well Ed that's a good point, I was thinking about making my slave drive my master and booting it from there but unplugging it completely is something I over looked, I will give it a shot.
