How to turn off vista parental controls pop ups?

Vista Sucks

New Member
Every time I start my laptop up I get these pop-ups in my user tray (or whatever it is called-- the thing by the clock in the lower right hand corner) and it warns me that I have no password set for my parental controls. I am the only person that uses my computer and I do not want to set a password for this. How do I get rid of this stupid warning (i.e. make it so I don't get that pop-up every time I restart my computer)?

You must have inadvertently turned them on. Go to Control Panel/Security/Parental Controls and click your user name.

You can turn it off there.

Hey guys,

I went to parental controls in the control panel and it is displaying this warning: "One or more administrator accounts do not have a password. As long as an administrator account has no password, any user can bypass or turn off parental controls. Click here to add a password for these accounts."

When I click on it, it takes me to a screen to enter a password...

I only have one account currently (the administrator account -- i.e. parental controls are off). Is there a way to get thing to shut up about setting a password (I don't want to set one since I am the only person using this computer)?

I should note that I was messing around with these parental controls before, had added another user account with some type of controls and then deleted it. Prior to adding that new account it never told me to add a password. Is it possible to get back to square 1 with no warnings and no password set?

You mean the actual Admin account is the only account? You shouldn't be using that except in emergency. Create another user, with Admin status if you wish, for your user name.

Other than that have you tried System Restore?

Why not just use the admin account? ... I've been using this account since I got my computer almost 2 years now.

Definitely not worth system restoring. I mean the pop up is annoying but not that annoying (I'd rather just set a password then system restoring).

Because it's dangerous to use the actual Admin account all the time as it completely bypasses all Vista security checks.

What kind of security checks are there on vista?...

UAC prompts for a start are bypassed. You have the authority in that user account to delete anything, including system files and folders. It is extremely dangerous for this reason as you may, if you work fast, click the wrong thing and bingo - no operating system.

If your machine became infected while you are signed in as Admin the malware has free rein to do just about anything.

Here's an article mentioning why you shouldn't use it, it's talking about reasons to sign in to the Admin account but I am sure there are lots more.

I have the Admin account enabled and on my Welcome screen and is available for me to sign into by switching users should I need it, but I would never use it by default.

Vista is a much safer system than those that went before and offers warnings when something you are doing may have drastic effects. By using the Admin account you are niftily avoiding all that.

This tutorial from this very forum which contains the same warning I'm giving you: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67567-administrator-account.html

Create a user name for yourself in the CP, with Admin privileges if you wish. Not quite the same as the actual Admin account but safer. It's an easy matter to transfer personal stuff from one user to another.

I FIGURED IT OUT: THIS will work I promise!!! i have been dealing with the same thing... Ok

So ...

1. Go to parental controls and set up a password for Administrator Account
2. Create a limited account (no need to set pw)
3. Turn on Parental Controls on the limited account
4. Close screen, Go back and turn OFF parental controls on Limited account
5. Go to User Accounts, Manage another account, Delete Limited account (make sure you turned off parental controls first)
6. REBOOT your computer... on reboot you have to type in your admin password
7. Go to User Accounts
8. Remove Password
9. Reboot...

Should be removed! Hope this helped!

I think he was using the UAC admin not the system admin
