Solved Cannot create shortcuts on desktop "windows could not create the shortcut"

spinksy

Member
Hi, i am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error:

Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.

I have over 180 GB free space left.

To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.
But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.

i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

Re: Cannot creat shortcuts on desktop "windows could not create the shortcut"

It may not be it, but it doesn't hurt to do a quick scan with
Malwarebytes

I had something where I could not delete files in Explorer even with a "delete on next boot" type utility. Turns out there was a Registry hack something about "ExplorerNoChange" or some crap. Malwarebytes cleaned it right off and things were back to normal.

You may have gotten some prank registry setting that's not allowing you to properly create icons on the desktop. It's a possibility.

Re: Cannot creat shortcuts on desktop "windows could not create the shortcut"

The only thing that comes to mind is try Windows Annoyances. Weird little things like that sometimes you can find a fix there.

Re: Cannot creat shortcuts on desktop "windows could not create the shortcut"

Hello,

This is a long shot, but should do any harm:

  • Navigate to the "C:\Users\AccountName" and Right Click on it (the folder) and select Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  • Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  • Click "Other Users and Groups".
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK THREE times.
  • Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  • Click Add.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click "Find Now".
  • Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  • Click OK.
  • Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  • Click OK TWO times.
There will be a few files that this will not work on, just click Continue at these prompts.

Re: Cannot creat shortcuts on desktop "windows could not create the shortcut"

It occurs to me if Malwarebytes found some nasties there may be others it didn't detect. You might want to run some scans with a bunch of the better free av scanners.

Actually that is a very good point (well done again MilesAhead) Can you do as MilesAhead said and also run HiJackThis and upload the log. It may indicate if there is anything nasty running in the background. I will take a look at that log once you upload it. Thanks! HijackThis - Trend Micro USA

Hello,

There is nothing particularly nasty showing up in that log file. However there is one empty entry that should be deleted (this is not a virus) Please update HiJackThis to the latest version (you are using 2.0.2 and the latest is 2.0.4) and run a scan without generating a log file. Carefully put a check next to the following entry and click "Fix Checked".

O23 - Service: Security Activity Dashboard Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\TrendSecure\SecurityActivityDashboard\tmarsvc.exe (file missing)
Please make sure that you are running suitable security software, but there are no major problems showing up in this log.

Also, you have quite a few startup items. This is not a problem, except that it may slow your startup times, so you may want to consider pruning some of them in msconfig.

Richard

thanks, i was having slow start ups and it seems to have helped.

i found that i have the desktop folder in two locations which may have something to do with it, 1 is in 'public' folder, and the other is in 'Dominic Spinks' but deleting 1 deletes the other, as if they are the same folder just in two locations, it also doesnt have a normal folder icon.

The 2 desktops are normal; one is from your user account, the other from the Public folder (what was the old "All Users").

Sounds like something got corrupted recently.

I'd try Startup Repair first (Startup Repair - Vista Forums), then, if that doesn't work, How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows.

Finally, try doing a System Restore from a point before the problem occurred (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html?filter[11]=Backup%20Restore). The trouble with this is that you don't know what caused the problem, so when you repeat whatever it was to bring your system back up to date, it's likely to recur. Try to isolate it by checking after each Windows Update or program reinstall you have to do after the restore.

No, neither Startup repair nor System File Checker will delete anything. They're quite safe.

for anyone viewing this site in the future, i solved the problem of two desktop icons for each application (solution found on google) by changing details in the registry settings, if you require this information please reply as i can not remember the location that needs to be changed at the moment but will be glad to help anyone that asks.

This is a totally different approach to the problem, but it worked for me, so here goes: I found that if I had too many icons on my Desktop, my system just wouldn't allow me to add any more. For every icon I deleted off of the Desktop, the system allowed me to add one more. Could that be your problem? (Also, by the way, I had a number of icons on my Desktop that I couldn't see because they were 'technically' off the screen (way to the side, out of visual range), but when I was finally able to access them and delete them, it created room for a number of icons that could also be added to the Desktop.)
