Hello all,
My computer is freaking out and i cant figure out why. I try to start it normally and it posts and I see the green loading bar for windows at the bottom of the screen and then the screen goes black. I can load into safemode but that is all. I can not restore sucessfully. Any ideas as to cause and repair of this problem. Any idea are welcome. thanks

ok tried the clean boot and it did not work. It still got stuck after the green loading bar. I have not loaded anything new onto my computer in the form of programs or hardware. It was working fine one day then the next this happens. I can tell you that the monitor seems to go to into standby mode and my video card fan stops spinning.

in safemode uninstall your video card drivers then try and boot into windows

ok uninstalled video driver and still wouldnt boot into windows. I am so losing my patience right now. Any more ideas guys/gals. all will be appreciated. I looked a the hot fix and it says not to install it if you get the black screen every time you start up which i do so that one is out as well.

My Computer

do you have onboard video? i mean aswell as your pcie gpu? wondering if its a psu issue , maybe safemode uses onboard

if its an autocheck issue you could try disabling it in safemode by renaming it

its in c/windows/system32 (autochk) rename it to autochk.old for example , this will stop it running (if its the problem) at least its another thing to rule out (im assumingnthats what that hotfix does anyway)

This is what it tells me

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N

why are you running check disk? If your video fan shuts down it has to be either psu related or gpu related

I thought that it might be the gpu but i swapped it out with a different one and it still had the same problem. shutting down after green bar. And i dont have a spare PSU to try so i want to rule out everything i can b4 i buy a new one.

to the team of vista forums: as you guys would like to help people you should be aware of these kinds of problems, just like we were taught sfc /scannow. this is the ksod known as a black screen of death. this is not a psu, cpu, or anykind ofhardwareproblem other than the gpu. If you hve the green bar loading, and your computer POSTS fine, and you dont hear any beeps, then your psu powering your gpu should be fine. Now, i believe that this is a driver problem. Go here: http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/272959-ksod-questions.html

it is a thread about ksod a&q. it will fix your problems (assuming that your compuer still accepts input from your keyboard). press ctrl+alt+del after welcome scree, or when scrn turns black.

All of my hardware is operating perfectly. I can access safemode. There is no cursor when the screen goes black because the monitor seems to go into standby mode showing me there is no signal and then it turns off. This all happens after the green loading bar for windows appears. I cannot use my vista disk for a fresh install it wont let me. It loads the files it needs and then i see the green bar and then the monitor goes into standby again. I am so confused by all this. All my hardware is sound I just dont know why windows wont load.

Yep, start up MSConfig (in Safe mode), click on Selective startup, click on Startup tab, and then Disable all, click on OK and Restart normally.

If the problem's still there, reboot into Safe mode, start up MSConfig again, click on Services tab, click on "Hide all Microsoft services", click on Disable all, click on OK, and Restart.

If the problem's still there, reboot into Safe mode, start up MSConfig again, click on Services tab, click on "Hide all Microsoft services" again to clear the check box, click on Disable all, click on OK, and Restart.

If either step above resolve the problem, use MSConfig to isolate the culprit. Enable half of the items you disabled in the last step you did, restart, see if problem recurs, and repeat the process until you've narrowed it down.
