Ok i did a bit of searching and found that running sfc/scannow in command prompt would display any errors as ive been getting non responsive programs and crashing computer for a few days now.
It finished and said this:
scan1d.jpg

Ive tried to access the file but it says access is denied. I am the admin and only user on this computer so not sure why.
Any ideas what to do next??

Cheers

Cheers,
I tryed it again and it came back the same as above. I tried step on the link you provided, it says to enter this
findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
I entered it but nothing happened it just returned C:\Windows\System32>
Any ideas why? or is there something else you can enter.

That's what it's supposed to do; it creates a file in your C:\Windows\System32 folder called sfcdetails.txt. Follow the rest of the instructions in the link, i.e. "Type the following command, and then press ENTER: edit sfcdetails.txt", etc,

EDIT:
Ive found the file its created.
Using edit sfcdetails.txt tells me i cant use "edit"
I can however see the contents of the .txt file.
Im not really sure what im looking at, im guessing some sort of error log?? not sure what to do with it now.

Cheers for the help so far

They all seem to be
"settings.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar
Which seems strange to me, how would windows sidebar be causing the problems of slowing down performance and causing other programs to become un responsive and making shutting down a 15minute+ process. I changed the settings so windows sidebar wouldnt appear in hope of stopping the problem yesterday . . .but its apparently causing problems today.

Hi Wales,

Can you upload the sfcdetails.txt file, please (see Vista Forums - FAQ: Reading and Posting Messages).

"I changed the settings so windows sidebar wouldnt appear in hope of stopping the problem yesterday." Did you block it from loading at Startup or what?

Yes, boot into safe mode: press f8 repeatedly (after POST, that screen that shows your OEM's logo with the options for entering CMOS setup). Run the scan from there.

However

If this does not work for you you can use these other free file integrity checker tools: File integrity checkers

Run them in safe mode also (but only if you trust that particular program, as safemode gives you administrative priveleges i believe?<<- someone confirm that for me).

The problems occur even with sidebar turned off so not sure whether that can be the cause??
Also vista came pre installed on the machine so i dont have a installation DVD.
I will try the scan later and see what it comes up with.
