Sudden CPU Loud whirring noise

Sitting there as usual, looking at email, nothing out of the ordinary,

all of a sudden, from nowhere, LOUD whirring noise coming from CPU.

Never heard this before.

Rebooted---it's gone. Maybe this SSs help, I've never really been one to understand performance data. I've left the PC on for a week- usually shut it down nightly. Could it be the temp?

Helllo Eknirb,

From looking at your top image from Task Manager, it looks like you had a spike in CPU usage there for a bit. That spike may have cause your built-in motherboard fan controllers to rev up the CPU fan to keep it cooler with the quick increase (spike) usage.

Monitor your CPU temps to make sure that they are not high or spiking on you as well to be safe. 45C as your showing in the last screenshot is ok. If they are high all the time, the CPU fan or heatsink may be loose, or you may need to clean and replace the thermal past on the CPU heatsink.

If the usage is spiking on you randomly, then you can look under the CPU bar in Resource Monitor to help see what is using so much of the CPU.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I seem to have noticed AVG turned on at that point- could that be it?

I suppose if it was doing a scan at the time, it could be if the increased CPU activity caused the CPU to heat up enough to have the CPU fan increase it's speed.

You could test this by manually running a scan to see if it does the same.

I uninstalled AVG and rebooted- it presented me with no desktop, just asolid royal blue background.

rebooted again,
desktop after long delay appeared, plus a browser window automatically asking me why did i uninstall aVG.

Did it sound like a Laser Beam cutting through Glass?

If so, your processor is blown.

In addition, how clean or dusty is your CPU fan? If the fan itself is going out, it can make a loud whining or squealing sound.

Agreed, it sounds like a fan controller increased the fan speed to cool something down. I can do it manually on my case, and it is pretty loud and annoying as hell.

That sounds about normal for the temps. I'm assuming that the CPU fan is spinning since the temps are not any higher than that.
